‘All will be forgiven’ – Coventry City urged to do Leeds United massive favour after Frank Lampard’s 2019 incident

Coventry City are in incredible form under Frank Lampard in 2025, having won 10 of the last 12 league games to propel themselves into the play-offs.

Perhaps the most impressive win of all was saved for the weekend, with Haji Wright bagging a hat-trick against Sunderland to increase his chances in the Championship Golden Boot race. The result consolidated Coventry’s position in fifth prior to the international break.

With the momentum behind the Sky Blues, you’d be a fool to bet against them heading into the final run-in as one of the main contenders for the play-off berths come the end of the season.

The Burnley, Sheffield United, and Sunderland fixtures always had the potential to be season-defining for Coventry, and they have already come through one with flying colours.

Coventry City have the potential to decide automatic promotion for Leeds United

Their form has been excellent of late, particularly at home. However, when Frank Lampard was appointed, it was expected that this season would perhaps be about consolidating, and the new manager has more than surpassed expectations thus far.

Crucially, to be in the play-offs right now is a great achievement from the situation when he took over, with Lampard and the players deserving huge credit for the run they have been on. Mark Robins may have laid the foundations but Lampard is the one that has taken Coventry into the play-off places.

It was a ‘really tough’ game for Robins on his return to Coventry recently, and losing so late on will no doubt have been a bitter pill to swallow. But, it was also typical of the place both teams are in right now. Robins did a magnificent job over nearly eight years, but Lampard has breathed new life into this side.

It puts them in with a real shout of playing Premier League football in 2025/26 and he has been breaking records during along the way, too. Lampard and his team continue to go from strength to strength at the CBS Arena by the game, even in spite of defeat to Derby County recently.

Leeds United were the only other team to beat Lampard in the last 12 fixtures, while they also have the easiest run-in of the top three sides, with very few teams left to play in the top half of the Championship.

Meanwhile, Burnley and Sheffield United must both face Lampard, which could have implications at the top if they play as well as they did against the Black Cats. It appears Lampard has learnt a lot in his career in recent years, and there is no reason his team couldn’t upset the picture at the top.

Leeds United will hope for Frank Lampard favour after Derby County defeat

There is evidently a confidence, a swagger, and plenty of belief around the club as they head into the run-in. Lampard’s side have hit momentum at just the right time, and there is a clear unity between the fans, players, and manager.

That can be a powerful tool in terms of continuing their good form, which Leeds are desperate to happen as much as Coventry fans are over the next two games. With confidence high in the camp, and many players hitting their stride and performing well, they could claim points from the chasing pack.

The intangibles can be a difficult aspect to value and also to stop when it is coursing through so much of this side. In the eyes of many Leeds fans, they will feel as though Lampard owes them after defeat against Derby County during the play-off semi-finals in 2019 — all will be forgiven in 2025 with two victories.

There will be little-to-no ‘stop crying Frank Lampard’ chants should Coventry do Leeds a favour or two in the coming weeks after the international break, which could shape the landscape of the automatic promotion picture and the course of multiple clubs’ futures as well.

Other than the Clarets and the Blades facing each other, Coventry is by far their most difficult game on paper each. It means they could have a huge say in dictating who wins the financial prize of automatic promotion and the Coventry-Lampard train doesn’t look like it is stopping any time soon.
