Bristol City shocked many this season as they finally bridged the gap from mid-table to finish in the top six and book their place in the Championship play-offs on the final day of the campaign.

The Robins made tough work of it against Preston North End on Saturday, but a Ross McCrorie brace saw them come from 2-0 down to pick up a point at Ashton Gate as they finished sixth. They now get ready to face Sheffield United on Thursday evening.

Bristol City have been strong at home throughout 2024/25, but they are facing up to a team who finished a colossal 22 points ahead of them in the table and Liam Manning’s side will have to be at their best to pick up a result against the Blades.

The Robins have not played in the Championship play-offs for 17 years, and history is not on their side, despite making it to the final in 2008 and supporters will be hoping that they can avenge their defeat on that day.

Hull City made Bristol City pay in the 2008 Championship play-off final

The Robins finished fourth in the league in the 2007/08 campaign, and faced Crystal Palace across two legs in the semi-finals.

They ran out 4-2 winners after taking a 2-1 advantage back to Ashton Gate. However, they found themselves 1-0 down heading into extra-time before two goals saw them head to Wembley to face Hull City.

It was a huge clash between two sides who had never been promoted to the Premier League before, and after a tense opening 37 minutes, Frazier Campbell finally found space on the left wing for the Tigers.

He crossed beautifully onto the foot of Dean Windass who fired in on the volley to secure victory, with Bristol City unable to find an answer in the second half.

It was a moment that still haunts those that were at Wembley, while the Robins supporters too young to have been there were set on a path that could have been all so different had Windass hit the ball slightly too high.

Liam Manning has to re-write history starting against Sheffield United

Sheffield United have also suffered play-off heartbreak, and Bristol City must be prepared to inflict further punishment on the Blades over the course of the next 180 minutes of football as Manning looks to take his team to uncharted territory.

The pain from 17 years ago still runs deep at Ashton Gate, with the club suffering relegation to League One in the 2010s, before years of mediocrity in the Championship.

However, with a young and exciting team, as well as one of the division’s best managers, they have the chance to do what Gary Johnson could not do in 2008 and take the Robins to the Premier League and boost the club’s finances significantly.

Thursday will be the opportunity for Bristol City to strike, and they will need their fans to back them all the way in BS3 so that they have something to protect at Bramall Lane on Monday evening.
