Derby County are closing in on their biggest signing since 2019.
Patrick Agyemang is set to sign for the Rams, with John Percy reporting on Friday evening that the Championship side have agreed personal terms with the striker ahead of a £5.8m move from Charlotte FC.
The American will be Derby’s most expensive signing since Krystian Bielik arrived at the club ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, and he will overtake Martyn Waghorn as the fourth largest fee that they have spent on a player.
With the Rams still waiting on investment, a fee of this size was perhaps not expected this summer. Nevertheless, this is a calculated risk and the American could just land the Championship side a huge profit in the coming years.
Patrick Agyemang is an exciting signing for Derby County
Derby are just a week away from their first pre-season game of 2025/26, and while Agyemang is currently on international break, supporters will be keen to see their soon-to-be new striker alongside the rest of the squad.

Five goals in 10 caps for the USA is a true indication of the 24-year-old’s talents and with John Eustace giving the green light for the deal, the Rams have an extremely good pairing up front in the Championship for the new campaign.
Carlton Morris has plenty of experience in the EFL and he can help guide the current Charlotte FC forward, whose height and power will be true assets.
There is no denying that Agyemang has areas he needs to improve on, but there will be quality around him at Pride Park and he will only develop going forward.

A home World Cup is perfect for Patrick Agyemang
Although there will be a desire to get going in England, the striker will have one eye clearly on next year’s World Cup. Canada, Mexico and his home country of the USA are all joint-hosts of the tournament and this will only be a benefit for Derby.
Agyemang has a point to prove still, and he will need to perform on a weekly basis in the Championship to ensure that he maintains his place in the national team ahead of next summer.

In recent years Derby have struggled to bring in players with sell-on value. However, the 24-year-old has that and if he does perform in 12 months’ time at his home World Cup, then that will only put further shine on his career and the risk that the Rams have made will pay off.
