Forget Luton Town, Barnsley could be League One’s real deal after ‘quality’ transfer business

League One side Barnsley could be the ones to watch this season, providing that they keep hold of one key man.

As the 2025/26 League One season draws closer to kicking off, many clubs are getting their squads ready for the challenge.

It promises to be a tight campaign next season after Birmingham City were promoted, alongside Wrexham and Charlton Athletic, leaving no likely winner.

Following relegation from the Championship, Luton Town have recruited well, although it could be argued that they have been trumped by Barnsley after their latest business.

It was a disappointing 2024/25 campaign for the Reds, but one arrival this summer looks set to have offered them a new lease of life.

Barnsley could be ones to watch in League One with new-look forward line

After rolling back the years in the 2024/25 League Two season with Notts County, David McGoldrick was always going to land a move higher up in the pyramid. There was plenty of interest in the former Sheffield United forward, but he opted for a return to South Yorkshire after signing for Barnsley.

The signing of the ‘quality’ forward who has had an ‘incredible career at the highest levels of the game’, as said by Barnsley Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz, via the club website, has already made an impact at the club after impressing during pre-season for the Reds.

Barnsley were somewhat lacklustre at times in front of goal last season, but the arrival of McGoldrick could easily have breathed a new lease of life into the squad. There is plenty of firepower in their forward line now; however, the club will have to fight against interest in one star for the remainder of the window.

The Reds must ensure Davis Keillor-Dunn stays this summer

The deal to sign David McGoldrick came as brilliant news for Barnsley fans, with his arrival sparking optimism in the fanbase ahead of the new season.

There is every chance that Barnsley can right the wrongs of last season, but they need to ensure that they keep star forward Davis Keillor-Dunn as well.

The Sunderland-born forward shone at Oakwell last season, netting a spectacular 18 goals, whilst also notching five assists for the Reds – an output that cannot be easily replaced.

Providing that Barnsley can keep hold of Davis Keillor-Dunn, he and McGoldrick could combine to be a fantastic force at League One level – one which has title-winning potential.
