Middlesbrough have completed the signing of defender Alfie Jones from Hull City, with the Boro faithful now hoping more new arrivals will follow suit.

After Middlesbrough appointed Rob Edwards this summer, Boro have endured a testing time during the summer transfer window.

The Boro headlines have been dominated by potential outgoings, with Rav van Berg in talks with Feyenoord and several Premier League sides eyeing Hayden Hackney.

Fortunes changed in the transfer window for Boro on Friday, with Middlesbrough closing in on Abdoulaye Kante.

With his £3m arrival imminent, Boro have announced the signing of Alfie Jones from Championship rivals Hull City, and the fanbase has been ecstatic as a result.

Middlesbrough fans react as Boro sign Alfie Jones from Hull City

Reports emerged last week that, Wrexham were poised to beat Boro for Jones, but now Edwards’ side have beaten the Welsh giants to the defender’s signature.

After Boro announced their first summer signing, Jones revealed why he signed for Boro on a four-year deal, owing to the “size of the club”.

The Teesside outfit have finally begun their summer business, and the Middlesbrough faithful reacted in unified jubilation following Jones’ announcement.

“Great signing” posted one fan, as a second joked: “I feel like I’m dreaming”.

One Boro fan said: “Has to be first of many”, as another told Boro to: “Open those floodgates.”

“Great signing, welcome Alfie UTB” added another Teessider, as a sixth Boro fan said: “Got a feeling this might be the kick on that we need”.

Hull supporters even chimed in with some positive appraisals of Jones, as one Tigers fan said: “Been a pleasure watching you in a Tigers shirt these past 5 years, Alfie.

“A good honest player on and off the pitch and a real team player. Go well Alfie. All the best for the future”.

The Boro faithful will be hoping more quality signings in the ilk of Jones, and Kante, follow suit ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Alfie Jones is the perfect Middlesbrough signing for Rob Edwards

Edwards’ style of play for Boro has been questioned, given the discrepancies between his philosophy and formation compared to predecessor Michael Carrick.

With Edwards preferring a three-back system, Jones is the perfect recruit for the former Luton Town boss, with the 27-year-old primed to thrive as the lynchpin in Edwards’ new look Boro outfit.

Jones featured 41 times for Hull last season, and his resolute defensive displays were pivotal to the Tigers dodging relegation to League One, and those attributes are what have caught the attention of Edwards.

With Boro last in the top flight several seasons ago, Jones will be tasked with looking towards the top of the table, rather than the drop zone, as he did in his final campaign for Hull.

Jones may not be the only Alfie to join Boro this summer, with Middlesbrough pushing to sign Alfie Doughty from Edwards’ former employers.
