Wrexham poised to beat Middlesbrough to sign ‘top’ Championship star as Red Dragons set for £3m bid

Newly promoted Wrexham are highlighting their promotion top-six aspirations so far this summer, and the club’s latest target would be another impressive piece of business.

The Red Dragons have been active throughout the summer transfer window as the Wrexham hierarchy look to equip head coach Phil Parkinson with Championship-quality reinforcements.

Wrexham will break their transfer record with the £4m signing of New Zealand winger Liberato Cacace, which smashes the £2m fee for Sam Smith in Wrexham’s most expensive signings list.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions last season, and Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be hoping to achieve a similar historic feat in the 2025/26 Championship season.

If the Red Dragons beat Middlesbrough to a £3m Championship transfer target, Parkinson’s promotion prospects will be bolstered even further.

Wrexham hope to beat Middlesbrough to sign Hull City’s Alfie Jones

As the Red Dragons look to continue their impressive recruitment so far this summer, Wrexham are hoping to beat Championship rivals Boro to sign Hull City defender Alfie Jones.

Last week, Boro became interested in Jones as new boss Rob Edwards looks to shape the squad to his liking.

With Boro defender Rav van den Berg wanted by Premier League sides, the Teessiders need defensive reinforcements, but Wrexham are now reportedly hoping to foil Boro’s plans to sign Jones.

According to the Daily Mail, “Wrexham are weighing up a £3m offer for Jones”, and are “hoping to steal a march” on second tier rivals Boro by acquiring the 27-year-old.

Defender Jones made 41 appearances for Hull last season under Selles and Tim Walter, playing an important role in the Tigers’ fight to survive relegation to League One before his game time tailed off severely in the final weeks of the season.

Walter, who was sacked in November by Hull, told Hull Live of Jones back in August: “He’s a top player, I love Alfie.”

Newly appointed Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles dropped Jones to the bench within the final five games of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, with his lack of speed a concern for the Spaniard.

However, given Wrexham’s playstyle and need for second tier experienced players, Jones would be the perfect fit for the Red Dragons.

After Hull replaced Selles with Sergej Jakirovic this summer, EFL Analysis dubbed Jones a loser from Jakirovic’s Hull appointment, as a result of the new Tigers boss wanting to instill a high-paced playstyle at the MKM Stadium.

With the former Southampton prospect not being blessed with pace, the Englishman’s game is not suited to playing a high defensive line.

Jones prospers at being a central defensive stalwart, and given that Parkinson employs a 3-5-2 set-up at Wrexham with three central defenders, the Hull ace would thrive at the heart of the Red Dragons’ defence.

Standing at 6’3″, Jones would be a brilliant addition to Parkinson’s squad, given his four seasons of second tier experience with Hull and his resolute defensive abilities.
