Wrexham are closing in on their third signing of the transfer window, and it is set to be an acquisition signalling their intent for their campaign in the Championship.
The Red Dragons were linked to several recognisable names at the start of the transfer window, as fans from other clubs expected them to continue their policy of signing ageing former Premier League stars to lift them through the English pyramid.
However, this signing would continue to demonstrate their shrewder business acumen this summer.
Phil Parkinson has targeted a number of defenders this summer but looks to have chosen a player who once attracted interest from Serie A giants to be the latest individual through the door after they brought in Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward.
It may also have other Championship sides looking towards north Wales with a bit more intrigue as they start to flex their financial muscles and activate their recruitment department.
Wrexham are set to break their transfer record to sign a New Zealand international
It has been reported across Italian media outlets that Wrexham are set to sign Liberato Cacace.
The New Zealand international had previously been the subject of interest from Serie A giants, but a move never materialised; now Wrexham are looking to make him their record signing.
Wrexham are set to bring in the Empoli full-back for a deal that could rise to £4 million.
While he would primarily be used as a defender, it is assumed, he has been deployed across a wide range of positions, playing as an attacking midfielder at times last season.

This versatility would be extremely useful for Parkinson as he looks to ensure Wrexham at least maintain their Championship status for next season.
Wrexham’s most expensive signings
As Wrexham look set to break their transfer record to sign the New Zealand international, it demonstrates there is money available for the Welsh club to spend, which may start to worry Championship rivals.
The Red Dragons have only ever spent over £1 million on one player previously, when they signed Sam Smith.

Wrexham will continue to be cautious with splashing the cash around; however, the ability to do so is a warning to other Championship clubs to take them seriously.
Following Smith’s signing, the next four most expensive signings were signed under the current ownership, with the cheapest of the five being Sebastian Revan for a fee of £350k.
