MK Dons have been busy in the summer transfer window.
After he was sacked by Derby County in February, Paul Warne did not wait too long for his next job and he has spent the last three months in Buckinghamshire.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has joined him at Stadium MK, while the Dons did miss out on David McGoldrick – despite previous interest. Barnsley won the race for the striker, but attention has already turned to other players.
Bringing in experience is one of Warne’s greatest desires, and with Steven Fletcher out of contract, MK Dons may have found a new forward. However, they are not the only interested party.

Exclusive: MK Dons and several other clubs show Steven Fletcher interest
At 38, there is every chance that this next move is Fletcher’s final one but after a good season for Wrexham in 2024/25, he has proven that age is just a number.

EFL Analysis has been given exclusive information from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, about where the ex-Scotland international’s future may lie.
He said: “I think there’s a few clubs keen. I’m sure he could stay in England, but he’s more likely to end up back in Scotland, in the top flight. That’s what I’m hearing.
“In England, I’ve heard MK Dons are a possibility, and so are Bristol Rovers. But I think he’s weighing up his options. There are options in England if he wants to stay.”

Paul Warne has to be careful with having too much experience
While it always comes in useful to have players who have great knowledge of the game, there is also a risk in that strategy.
When Warne was at Derby, he often had injury problems within his squad, and as his team had the highest average age in League One in 2023/24, it was clear to see where the issue was.

It’s a long season in League Two and he will need physically fit players to do that hard work week in, week out. Although Fletcher has enough quality to make a difference, an over-reliance on him at 38 could be a problem.
However, like Graeme stated, it is not a straightforward deal for any side and the veteran striker is still weighing up his options.
