One Hull City player could have his Tigers career revived as his teammate looks set to move on permanently.
Hull City have confirmed the appointment of Sergej Jakirovic ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season, the sixth permanent head coach of the Acun Ilicali era.
There will be plenty of expectation on Jakirovic to deliver a much improved campaign to the last one, which saw Hull City survive by the skin of their teeth on the final day. Ilicali is always clear in his ambitions of notching a play-off finish, and whilst last season proved to be a major setback, it won’t hamper his ambition.
Following the arrival of Jakirovic, the cogs in the transfer window are already turning, with Hull City confirming the signing of Reda Laalaoui, whilst Xavier Simons has gone the other way to join Bolton Wanderers. The Englishman won’t be the only departure from the MKM, with one player also reportedly close to a permanent exit from the club.

Hull City set to sanction permanent exit of Matty Jacob
As reported by the Hull Daily Mail, Tigers defender Matty Jacob is expected to leave the club in the coming days. It is understood that a League One move is in the offing for the left-back.
Jacob played a minor role in the 2024/25 Championship season under both Tim Walter and Ruben Selles, having notched just eight appearances, four of which were starts. The 24-year-old was much more prominent on the side under Liam Rosenior in the back end of the 2023/24 season, where he managed to squeeze out Ryan Giles from the starting side.
Giles has been exiled from Hull to some extent, being shipped off to Middlesbrough in the 2024/25 season, where he endured a difficult loan spell. With Jacob’s potential exit, however, it could provide a new lease of life for the struggling full-back.

Potential Matty Jacob departure could hand an opportunity to Ryan Giles
Hull City’s full-back options, as it is, are already rather light, especially on the left side. Brandon Fleming will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer, which on top of Jacob’s likely departure, just leaves Giles.
Ilicali will no doubt recruit in this area this summer, but there could be plans to see Giles reinstate his place in the starting XI.
His spell at Middlesbrough in the latter half of the 2024/25 season didn’t quite go to plan, but he has shown previously to be a top player at Championship level, especially on the attacking front.
Jakirovic’s attacking set-up could easily get the best out of Giles this season, which is where he would thrive, but there is no doubt he will need to touch up his defending to an extent. The new Hull coach enjoys utilising a target man to lead the attack, which could give him another reason to start Giles because of his precision and consistency with crossing.
Giles has the potential to be a crucial member of this Hull side. If he is entrusted with such a responsibility, we could see a resurgence from the man who has had a troubled time at the MKM so far.
