John Eustace will have one huge Derby County transfer regret that is obvious to see

Six games into the new Championship season, John Eustace would have been hoping for a better start with his Derby County team.

The Rams are in the bottom three right now, and while the league remains tightly packed together, three defeats from the first couple of months has left them with plenty of work to do in the next few weeks.

Derby have an excellent record against Wrexham, and they will be looking to continue this on Saturday when they make the trip to the Racecourse Ground, but there is one issue that continues to stalk the East Midlands outfit.

Eustace made 13 signings in the transfer window, yet there is one key component still missing at Pride Park, and it’s proving costly.

Derby County missed out on signing a winger with pace in the transfer window

Ben Brereton Diaz was Derby’s final signing in the summer, as the Chile international arrived from Southampton on loan.

While he has been featuring out wide for the Rams, it’s not been the best of starts to life in black-and-white for the former Nottingham Forest man, and his impact has not been felt. Meanwhile, Corey Blackett-Taylor is slowly returning from injury, leaving Eustace with limited options out wide.

It’s evident from the games that Derby have played this season that pace is crucial. Rhian Brewster can provide that, but he is also injured and therefore Eustace’s issues are persisting.

Not signing a winger who can burst down the flanks will be a source of frustration for the boss of the Rams, and in January, it may well be the first area of interest for him.

How Ben Brereton Diaz has started at Derby County

Brereton Diaz has started twice for Derby already, but despite playing 156 minutes, he is yet to make a real impact on the pitch.

From three shots, he has racked up an xG rate of just 0.23 and he has failed to threaten in the final third. His lack of out and out pace is proving to be an issue, and he has not found himself in the advanced positions that the Rams need him in.

However, Brereton Diaz can score goals at this level, and Eustace knows that he will need to be patient with the 25-year-old before he gets up and running.

Nevertheless, this situation could have been avoided had Derby landed their perfect winger early in the summer transfer window.
