Southampton don’t need to spend a penny on the perfect Aaron Ramsdale replacement

Will Still looks set to lose one of his top stars this summer, with Aaron Ramsdale edging ever closer to a move back to the Premier League.

Southampton appointed Will Still earlier in the summer to spearhead the Saints’ season back in the Championship.

He would have understood that after Ramsdale’s performances for Southampton last season in the Premier League, he may have a battle on his hands to keep the keeper at the club in the Championship.

Now the battle appears to be done, with Newcastle likely to emerge as the victors by prying Ramsdale away from the Saints.

Ramsdale is the latest player set to leave the south coast club, as full-back Kyle Walker-Peters left Southampton to become a Premier League free agent this summer, with attackers Kamaldeen Sulemana and Paul Onuachu also exiting.

However, unlike those exits, which would require a bit of scouting to replace Will Still, he will already have identified his Ramsdale replacement.

Gavin Bazunu is ready to be Southampton’s number one

The Ireland international has returned to Southampton after his short loan spell in Belgium last season, one that he has admitted he found tough.

However, so far in pre-season he has shown the form of a couple of seasons ago that helped the Saints get promoted to the Championship under Russell Martin.

Saints’ fans will hope that can continue as the club moves into the season and as Ramsdale looks set to depart, with Bazunu finally delivering on his promise, having previously shown in flashes he can be a world-class shot-stopper, paying back that £12 million transfer fee Southampton paid Manchester City to sign him.

Bazunu on his Southampton future

The Ireland international recently spoke to the Southern Daily Echo about his future at Southampton, with fans pleased to see his dedication to the club, hoping now that he may turn his attention away from any other opportunities.

He said: “I want to be here, definitely. I’m not sure how much of it’s going to be in my hands, but I’m ready to play, and I’m hoping to play here.

“All we can do is take these opportunities we get to play and just show what we can do, really. It’s nice to be back out there getting minutes again.

“To be able to start from the very start with the lads and to be able to get minutes in the games and train every day is really important.”
