Truly frightening Burnley statistic proves Scott Parker’s side have hit a new level, they could snatch promotion now

With ten games to go, there’s everything to fight for at the top of the Championship, and one particularly impressive Burnley statistic suggests we could see Scott Parker’s men nab a promotion spot.

Since the start of the season, many had expected Burnley would be competing for promotion again this season after falling out of the Premier League last term.

Scott Parker’s side have proven to be one of the most consistent and efficient teams in the division this year, too, and have been breaking records along the way.

As things stand, Burnley are third in the Championship table. They sit two points behind Sheffield United and Leeds United, though the latter can extend that lead if they beat Portsmouth later today.

But, Burnley just have to worry about themselves, and at the moment, they’re looking exceptionally good, with one major improvement in a key area of late.

Burnley statistic shows massive improvement

Burnley’s phenomenal record at the back has been their standout attribute this season. The Clarets have still conceded only ten goals throughout the whole campaign, and have kept an abundance of clean sheets along the way.

Not long ago, we suggested this defensive approach was costing Burnley in attack, but Parker must have been listening, as his team have completely transformed in recent weeks.

Burnley have now scored ten goals in their last three league games, with a 2-1 win over Cardiff City sandwiched between 4-0 victories over Sheffield Wednesday and then Luton Town this weekend.

That’s impressive enough on its own, but when you look back at their previous results before this mini run, you will see that Burnley had actually only scored 11 goals in their 11 games leading up to the Sheffield Wednesday win.

So, from an average of one goal per game, to 3.33 goals per game, within a matter of weeks. Clearly, Burnley have hit top form just as it matters most.

Burnley skipper Josh Brownhill has been at the heart of this purple patch, scoring in each of those three wins. But, goals from Marcus Edwards, Manuel Benson, Lyle Foster, Ashley Barnes, and Maxime Esteve have also contributed to the goalscoring run.

In a short space of time, the Clarets have gone from barely having a single goalscoring outlet, to possessing a threat from all angles. That is a Burnley statistic that will surely strike fear into the hearts of all their promotion rivals.

Can Burnley take top-two spot before the season ends?

A couple of weeks ago, it looked like Leeds United had promotion sewn up, and Sheffield United would follow them in second place.

Now, even if Leeds do overcome Portsmouth, that fight at the top is incredibly tight still. Sheffield United are grinding out results, Burnley are firing on all cylinders, and Leeds are an exceptionally powerful outfit on their day.

Looking ahead, Burnley still need to face Sheffield United at Turf Moor. That game on April 21st will no doubt be massive, and could well make all the difference when it comes to determining who goes up and who has to settle for the play-offs.

Based on the numbers behind that Burnley statistic in front of goal right now, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them taking one of those top spots before the season is out.
