Derby County had a ‘sense of relief’ in May 2021 after failed takeover bid, it’s not over for Sheffield Wednesday

Derby County are one of the most stable clubs in the Championship right now.

Kieran Maguire is a huge fan of David Clowes, the man who rescued the Rams from liquidation in July 2022 and they are preparing well for the new campaign.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are struggling. A proposed takeover of the Owls has fallen through and Dejphon Chansiri remains in charge of the club.

With no end seemingly in sight for the South Yorkshire outfit, they only have to turn to Derby to realise that all hope should not yet be lost with the Rams also having their own failed takeover bid in May 2021.

Derby County had a narrow escape from Erik Alonso in 2021

The start of the decade was a tough one for those at Pride Park, and after narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign, they needed a new owner. Spanish businessman Erik Alonso had reportedly agreed to purchase the club, but just days after survival was confirmed, the deal fell through.

Alonso had spoken at length on social media about his plans for the club, but BBC Radio Derby commentator Ed Dawes was unimpressed. He said (via: BBC Sport): “I think Rams fans could have a sense of relief about them over this decision.

“Although this is the second collapsed takeover of Derby County this year, it is clear that if the club do not feel the deal is right for the future then they are happy to walk away from it.

“Erik Alonso has been very upfront about his plans to buy Derby, refinancing Pride Park to push the sale through and investing that money in the team. But some of his other claims have caused alarm bells to ring among supporters.

“Targeting the Premier League is a realistic ambition, getting them into the Champions League is not. His social media activity has also caused raised eyebrows.

“What happens next is anyone’s guess, but Derby are still a suitable target for anyone who has an interest in the business of football and it should be no surprise if chairman Mel Morris is already talking to other suitors.”

Sheffield Wednesday should not lose hope

While the Owls are in a dire situation, Derby are proof that a situation can be turned around no matter how bad it seems to be.

The Rams did go into administration shortly after Alonso’s failed takeover, but eventually the right man came along to rescue them from the pits of despair.

Chansiri must sell quickly, but Sheffield Wednesday also need to find a buyer with the right intentions and one who will lead them to success in the future.

Danny Rohl’s future is up for debate once again, meaning that a new owner may have to find a replacement. But this will be the least of the supporters’ concerns right now.
