Wrexham are closing in on the signing of Lewis O’Brien.

That’s according to Alan Nixon, who has stated that the Welsh outfit are making a new bid for the midfielder who has been the subject of significant interest this summer.

O’Brien spent the second half of last season on loan at Swansea City, and Hull City have pushed to sign the midfielder in this transfer window. However, their transfer fee ban means that there is no chance of a move to the Tigers happening.

This is a major deal for Wrexham, and Phil Parkinson is making a statement with this signing but Luke Williams will also be glad to see the ex-Huddersfield Town man get a deserved transfer.

Lewis O’Brien will bring fight to Wrexham, Luke Williams knows that

When O’Brien joined Swansea on deadline day in the winter, it was seen as a huge coup and he was pivotal in the South Wales side’s turnaround in the final months of the campaign.

The 26-year-old brought grit and determination to the Swans’ midfield, and his manager at the time, Williams, loved everything about him.

He said after a 1-0 win over Bristol City in February (via: BBC Sport): “Lewis O’Brien showed he wants to come here and fight for us. He showed such a commitment. I am very happy with that and grateful to him.

“The players were destroyed at the end of the game, they left everything on the pitch. Then we celebrated with the fans. There is nothing better than that. We showed the fans we are fighting for them.”

Phil Parkinson is starting to make the changes he needs to make

It had been a slow start to the transfer window for Wrexham, but with Josh Windass now at the Racecourse Ground and O’Brien looking as though he will join him, they can start looking towards mid-table in the Championship.

It’s going to be a challenge for the Red Dragons in the 2025/26 after Parkinson led them to three successive promotions from the National League to the second tier, but they are making the changes they need.

O’Brien, at 26, can be a star for the years to come at Wrexham and with the backing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club can become a force.

However, more depth is still needed and they must replace former promotion heroes in a ruthless fashion.
