Birmingham City snubbed by experienced former Premier League ace after ‘£1m’ offer

Birmingham City are still looking to make changes to their squad for the 2025/26 campaign, with the defence already being eyed for improvements by Chris Davies.

Blues were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City on Saturday afternoon. The Potters returned to the top two with their victory, while the visitors at the bet365 Stadium dropped to 11th following their second defeat of the season.

Birmingham were relatively lacklustre in front of goal, failing to find the target from any of their seven shots, as Bosun Lawal secured all three points for his side with a goal in the 21st minute.

Davies’ side dominated the ball but they struggled to threaten Viktor Johnasson. As well as that, their lack of Championship experience in the heart of their defence could become a problem and there are perhaps some frustrations as to a decision made by one particular free agent target.

Craig Dawson turns down move to Birmingham City

Craig Dawson was on Derby County’s shortlist earlier this summer alongside Wrexham, while Blackburn Rovers have also been keen on the centre-back.

However, many may have expected Birmingham to win the race for the 35-year-old after it emerged that they were in the hunt for his signature. Yet, according to Alan Nixon, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man has snubbed Blues.

He said: “Craig Dawson turned down a stunning £1 million a year contract offer from Birmingham City. The experienced centre half is a free agent but said no to the chance to join the Blues in the Championship – much to their surprise.

“Dawson has also had offers from Blackburn and Wrexham among others but wants the next and final move to tick all the boxes.”

Craig Dawson’s experience will be a huge loss to Blues

There is no denying the fact that a £1m contract is quite a substantial amount for a player who may not feature on a weekly basis, but Dawson has played over 300 times in the Premier League alone and this would be invaluable experience for Davies.

The likes of Phil Neumann and even Christoph Klarer may need some guidance in the next few weeks, especially after a difficult defeat over the weekend, and the 35-year-old would have given that.

Nevertheless, it appears that the defender is also looking for consistent game time and at this moment, Birmingham may not be able to provide that.

As a free agent, Dawson has time to make his decision. Yet, will he be offered similar terms from any other Championship club?
