Sheffield United set for change after Ruben Selles sacking with former EFL boss ready

Sheffield United have sacked Ruben Selles after a dismal start to the season, and a hunt for a replacement has started.

Last week, it appeared that Danny Rohl was on the Blades’ radar, but any possibility of the former Sheffield Wednesday boss moving to Bramall Lane was pushed back.

However, Chris Wilder is on the shortlist of the South Yorkshire outfit, only a few months after supporters were disgusted by the decision to part ways with the ex-Middlesbrough and Watford manager.

Now, another name has been thrown up in the form of Tony Mowbray and the direction that Sheffield United may take in the coming weeks, months and years may well be decided in the next few days, as Selles’ time in charge comes to an end.

Tony Mowbray joins Sheffield United shortlist as Blades look for new approach

Tony Mowbray was sacked by West Brom back in April, and since then, he has been out of management. However, he was on the shortlist at Bramall Lane as pressure mounted on Selles.

Following information from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis can confirm that Mowbray has been on the radar of the Blades, and he is open to work after a summer break. However, Wrexham are also keen on him.

Sheffield United may not make a move immediately, and they are doing strict due diligence on their options after the disappointing start that came under Selles. There are a number of candidates, with Wilder in pole position.

Tony Mowbray’s time at West Brom may suggest he is not the right choice for the Blades

Last season was tough for Mowbray at West Brom, and he was sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Derby County in April, as the Baggies fell away from the play-off places.

Supporters had hoped that he would bring the Premier League back to The Hawthorns, having won promotion with the club in 2008, yet those glory days were long behind both himself and the club in 2024/25.

Therefore, it must be questioned whether Mowbray is the right choice for Sheffield United as they need a commanding leader from the off who will help turn this shocking situation around.

Wilder knows the Blades inside and out, and while it may seem like a strange decision to bring him back to Bramall Lane, it could be for the best in the short-term.
