‘Brilliant’ Preston North End ace wanted by Manchester United amid player’s impending exit

One Preston North End player is now the subject of transfer interest from Premier League giants, Manchester United.

It has been a pretty uninspiring season for Preston North End, who remain in a relegation battle going into the weekend.

Preston will be supporting Coventry City in the latest round of fixtures as they look to secure their Championship status for another season.

Going into Saturday’s matches, the Lilywhites are 18th in the second tier, but sit just three points above the relegation zone.

But if Coventry beat Luton Town, there is basically no way Preston can go down on the final day.

Once the season comes to a close, attention will quickly turn toward the summer transfer window and potential incomings and exits.

Preston North End’s Freddie Woodman wanted by Manchester United

On that front, it looks as though Preston could be set to lose one of their top players.

Freddie Woodman started the 2024/25 season as their main goalkeeper but is ruled out for the remainder of the campaign due to injury.

He kept 13 clean sheets in 37 league matches prior to picking up his problem – form that was seemingly enough to attract the attention of Manchester United.

Now 28, the shot-stopper has perhaps not quite lived up to his true potential, with Lee McCulloch previously calling him ‘brilliant’ and a ‘rising star’ during a loan spell with Kilmarnock, as per BBC Sport.

But it has now been reported this week that Manchester United are looking to land the Preston star on a free transfer this summer to replace the outgoing Tom Heaton.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke wrote on X/Twitter: “Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer to become their No.3 keeper with Tom Heaton expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.”

Preston North End contract expiry dates

Losing Woodman on a free transfer is not an ideal situation for Preston but there’s probably not a lot they can do if a Premier League club comes calling.

The Englishman is not the only star who is likely to be departing Deepdale for free this summer, however.

Including four loan players, a staggering 14 stars will see their contracts run out in May and June of 2025.
