Callum Paterson makes ‘massive club’ claim to Sheffield Wednesday fans amid MK Dons switch

Another top player has left Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with Callum Paterson deciding to end his time with the Owls to join MK Dons instead.

Paterson joins a long line of players who have departed Hillsborough so far this summer. While Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba were sold, Josh Windass and Michael Smith terminated their contracts.

In Paterson’s case, he had been out of contract since the end of the season but returned to training with Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month with a view to potentially extending his stay in S6.

That didn’t come to fruition, though, and he’s now made the decision to drop down two divisions to join MK Dons in League Two.

Callum Paterson’s message to Sheffield Wednesday fans

On Monday evening, reports emerged suggesting Paterson was set to join MK Dons or Oxford United and would be parting ways with Wednesday.

Confirmation of that happened very soon after, with Paterson first taking to Instagram to share a heartfelt message with the Owls fanbase.

He wrote: “Sadly my time at Sheffield Wednesday has come to an end. I’ve loved every second of playing for this massive club and made so many memories that I’ll never forget, especially in the promotion season. 186 times I was privileged enough to wear the badge and it was always an honour to pull on that shirt whenever I got the opportunity.

“I would just like to thank all of the fans for making me feel at home in Sheffield for the last five seasons. Thank you to all of the backroom staff, the physios, the coaching staff and everyone else in between. You have all been amazing with me and I’ll forever appreciate it.

“I’ve made some amazing friends for life at the club and in the city itself. Sheffield will always hold a special part in my life with my daughter being born here. I wish everyone at SWFC all the best for the upcoming season and for the future beyond that. Excited to start a new chapter.”

As for that next chapter, Paterson will link up with Paul Warne’s promotion favourites MK Dons, who are well-placed to win the League Two title this season before a ball has even been kicked.

MK Dons snap up Callum Paterson

Paterson’s arrival was announced on the MK Dons website, with Warne sharing his thoughts on his latest capture.

He said: “It’s great news that we’ve convinced Callum to come to the club. I’ve spoken to him numerous times over the summer. He’s a player who’s always been a thorn in my side when I’ve managed teams against him!

“He’s played in numerous positions and can slot in across the front line. He’s good in the air, works really hard for the team, and he’s a winner, which is what we want at this football club.

“I think he’s a massive addition to the frontline, both in training and on matchdays. Everyone is thrilled to have him here, and we all look forward to working with him!”

Paterson follows the likes of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Aaron Collins in taking a step down the Football League to be a part of the exciting MK Dons project.

As per our League Two predictions for 2025/26, we’d be very surprised if MK Dons aren’t crowned champions of the fourth tier come May.
