Sheffield Wednesday’s hopes of keeping fan-favourite dented as MK Dons and Championship rivals circle

The Sheffield Wednesday squad is getting weaker all the time, and now, another of the club’s most beloved stars could be on his way out.

With Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay player wages this summer, we’ve already seen the likes of Josh Windass and Michael Smith terminate their contracts.

Sheffield Wednesday have also sold Djeidi Gassama, Anthony Musaba, and youth prospect Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri in an effort to raise funds and stop the ongoing financial crisis.

The Owls squad is now paper thin, and with just under two weeks until their first game of the season, news of another exit is the last thing fans will want to hear.

Callum Paterson wanted by MK Dons and Oxford United

We already know that Barry Bannan is technically out of contract and could leave Wednesday at any time. The same is true of Callum Paterson, who departed at the end of June but was spotted training with the Owls again recently.

However, the latest report on his situation comes from Joe Crann and the Sheffield Star, with claims that Paterson is now being targeted by both MK Dons and Championship side Oxford United.

It is said the experienced and versatile Wednesday icon has been offered a deal by both clubs and they have a big advantage over the Owls in that they can offer proper terms whereas the Hillsborough outfit are restricted to a wage cap of £7,000 per week right now.

While it is not clear where Paterson will end up, it is said to be very unlikely that he stays in S6. The Scotland international was expected to feature for Wednesday in their recent pre-season game versus Mansfield Town but ended up missing the game.

Sheffield Wednesday need a win in the transfer market soon

It has been said that Sheffield Wednesday will no longer sell any players this summer, but if they don’t sign some players soon, they’ll be doomed for the new season.

Apparently, the Owls have a list of targets as they look to acquire free transfers and loan signings.

One player they are thought to be close to signing is Mohamed Konate, while other trialists like Reece Clairmont and Matthew Whittingham have been mooted.

The problem is, none of those players really have the experience needed to drag Wednesday out of this mess. Although, at this moment in time, we’re sure Owls fans would take any shred of positive news in the transfer market.
