EFL Analysis understands that a talented Chelsea youngster has rejected a move to the Championship after several clubs showed an interest.

Championship clubs are using the Premier League loan market to their advantage, seizing the opportunity to snap up some quality youngsters.

For instance, Birmingham City have signed James Beadle and Tommy Doyle on loan from top-flight clubs to bolster their promotion chances in 2025/26.

Sheffield United have also loaned Tyler Bindon from Nottingham Forest, someone Ruben Selles rated highly during his time at Reading.

Meanwhile, a transfer window wouldn’t be complete if Chelsea players weren’t temporarily offloaded to the Championship, with one starlet rejecting that opportunity.

Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has ‘turned down’ a Championship move

Middlesbrough were interested in signing Alfie Gilchrist, either on loan or permanently, from Stamford Bridge after watching him flourish at Sheffield United last term.

Another player linked with a switch to the second tier was striker Marc Guiu. Ipswich were interested in Guiu as a possible replacement for Liam Delap in May, but any chance of him moving to the Championship is now dead in the water.

As per information from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that Guiu has ‘turned down’ a transfer to the Championship.

We understand that Boro and Blackburn Rovers were two of the other clubs interested in taking him on loan for the 2025/26 campaign.

However, Guiu doesn’t believe that a campaign in the second tier is most beneficial for his development and is more likely to head back to Spain.

Guiu is making potentially the wrong decision

After impressing in the Europa Conference League for Chelsea, Guiu will perhaps feel he’s capable of playing regular first-team football in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Admittedly, a loan to La Liga is more enticing than a move to the Championship, but a switch to England’s second tier would have offered him invaluable experience.

So many strikers have been loaned to the Championship from Premier League clubs and become world-class forwards, most notably Harry Kane.

A campaign at a promotion-chasing side such as Ipswich would have therefore been beneficial for the 19-year-old’s development, especially working under a talented coach like Kieran McKenna.

Though returning to Spain is more enticing for Guiu, who scored 33 seconds into his senior debut for Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao in October 2023.
