Coventry City could smash their club-record transfer fee this summer after reports reveal the Sky Blues’ interest in a standout Championship talent.

Coventry City travel to Hull City on Saturday afternoon to begin their 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Last season, it ended in heartbreak for the Sky Blues after Frank Lampard’s side were beaten in the Championship play-off semi-final against eventual winners Sunderland.

Following that, Coventry have enjoyed a quiet summer transfer window compared to some of their league rivals.

However, that could all change imminently as the Sky Blues consider a club-record bid for a Championship talent.

Coventry City consider club-record bid for Hull City defender Charlie Hughes

Coventry signed Kaine Kesler-Hayden from Aston Villa this summer ahead of Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Southampton.

Spanish full-back Miguel Brau has also arrived, alongside Carl Rushworth, who joined on loan from Premier League Brighton.

Now, Coventry are reportedly prepared to break their club transfer record for Hull defender Charlie Hughes.

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett revealed on X: “Ccfc (Coventry City) considering a club-record bid for Hull young player of the year Charlie Hughes, after seeing an offer worth £7m (£6m+1m) rejected.

“Coventry considering a new bid of £8m+1m I’m told, which would be a new club record. Hull don’t want to sell, but would want £10m+.”

21-year-old Hughes featured 27 times in the Championship for the Tigers last term to cement himself as one of the best young central defenders in the second tier.

Unfortunately for Coventry, one Hull reporter has revealed that they face major stumbling blocks in their pursuit of the Englishman, who they will play against this weekend.

Hull City’s valuation for Charlie Hughes amid Coventry City pursuit

After Hughes’ impressive campaign in the heart of Hull’s defence, in his first season at the club after joining from Wigan Athletic, the Tigers have set a lofty valuation on the defender.

Hull Daily Mail reporter Baz Cooper revealed on X: “Hcafc genuinely believe Charlie Hughes will be a £20m+ asset, they rate him that highly and believe he will command a bigger fee than Jacob Greaves.

“As it stands, no intention of selling this summer.”

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic recently told BBC Sport: “He’s very important. From what I’ve seen until now, he can develop even more.

“He can improve more and then maybe he will be our best transfer in the history of this club. I don’t know what the record is until now. For me, he is (worth) over £20million now.”

“If I was he (Hughes) I would stay here one more season. He has everything a modern defender needs.

“Good on ball, good without ball. Good in the air, good anticipation of the game, everything. He’s a very good profile. From what I’ve seen until now, he will be in (with) a top-five English club.”
