Former Derby County winger makes shock switch to League Two side, it’s not MK Dons

Derby County have had a mass clear out this summer, with a number of League One promotion heroes parting ways with the club.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has joined MK Dons to reunite with Paul Warne, while Sonny Bradley and Tyrese Fornah will feature in League One for Lincoln City and Northampton Town respectively.

The Rams themselves have made seven new signings, with David Ozoh returning to Pride Park after an injury-hit loan in 2024/25.

Nevertheless, one former Derby ace has now signed for a new club, but it may come as a surprise to see who he has joined.

Tom Barkhuizen joins Barrow after Derby County departure

Tom Barkhuizen nearly moved to South Korea in January, but instead he stayed in the East Midlands and played a small part in helping the team avoid relegation.

However, his contract expired in the summer and with just a few days to go until the new League Two season starts, the ex-Preston North End man has made his way back to the north-west and joined Barrow AFC for the 2025/26 campaign.

It’s a statement signing for the Bluebirds, and it may come as a shock to see the 32-year-old drop to the fourth tier, as he did prove to be very useful in League One during his last season at that level.

Yet, for Barkhuizen it’s the perfect opportunity to get consistent minutes on the pitch and prove himself as one of the best wingers in a division once again following a difficult end to his time at Derby.

Tom Barkhuizen can help propel Barrow up the League Two table

After struggling with injuries over the course of the last year, a reset is exactly what the wide player needs and he will get that at Barrow.

There will be plenty expected of him given the career that he has had so far, but it would not be a surprise to see him have a very strong campaign in League Two.

It’s also a surprise to see him not join MK Dons, having been a favourite of Warne’s while he was at Derby. However, their loss is the Bluebirds’ gain and they have just pushed themselves into contention for a top seven finish this season with this signing.
