Leeds United have ambitious plan to replace Illan Meslier with one of Championship’s top talents

One of Leeds United’s biggest issues in recent weeks has been the form of Illan Meslier, but the club has a big plan to resolve that come the summer.

Leeds United have somehow gone from looking like they had the Championship title wrapped up, to now slipping out of the top two for the first time since December, all in a matter of weeks.

It would seem, as the old saying goes, Leeds are falling apart again. And, most fans, neutrals, and pundits have pointed the finger of blame at goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who has made a number of errors of late.

Daniel Farke made a change in goal this weekend, bringing in Karl Darlow to replace Meslier. But, longer term, the club is already thinking about who they can bring in to become the new number one at Elland Road.

Leeds United want to sign James Trafford if they get promoted

According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, Leeds are eyeing up Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as a replacement for Meslier, in what would be an ambitious swoop for their rival’s main man between the sticks.

Nixon claims Leeds will “move out” Meslier regardless of whether they get promoted or not this season, with the Yorkshire club clearly running out of patience with the Frenchman now.

It is thought Trafford is at the top of their wishlist, along with Newcastle’s Nick Pope. But, as expected, the chances of either of those moves happening will absolutely depend on what division Leeds are in next year.

On the flipside, it is not expected to be difficult for Leeds to get rid of Meslier, with plenty of “admirers” despite his recent form. Among them, Manchester United’s goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton, is a fan and will try to persuade the Old Trafford outfit to make a move “if the price is right.”

James Trafford belongs in the Premier League

Burnley have been breaking records this season thanks to Trafford, and he’s now firmly established himself as one of the best players in the Championship full stop, not just one of the best goalkeepers.

He’s a rare case of a Championship player being ready for England duty, and there’s no doubt that he will eventually be the number one for the Three Lions, once Jordan Pickford moves aside.

Whether it be with Burnley, Leeds, or any other club, we will definitely see James Trafford in the Premier League next season. It’s where he belongs, and his form this season has proven that, frankly, he is too good for the second tier.
