Norwich City chief shares ‘huge’ verdict as first signing of the summer announced

Norwich City will want to place themselves in Championship promotion contention in 2025/26, and they’re already going the right way about it.

Norwich are close to appointing Liam Manning as their new manager after sacking Johannes Hoff Thorup with only two matches left of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Englishman worked wonders with Bristol City by guiding them to a Championship play-off finish for the first time since 2008.

But Manning believes in the project at Norwich more, and that is why he’s set to become the Canaries’ new boss ahead of the transfer window opening.

Once the 39-year-old does join, barring any late hiccups, he will have one new permanent signing already through the door at Carrow Road.

Ben Knapper reacts as Norwich City confirm the signing of Jacob Wright

In January, Norwich captured midfielder Jacob Wright on loan from Manchester City, and the 19-year-old played an influential role towards the end of the campaign.

The youngster assisted four times in 19 appearances, impressing during his short time at the club, and ultimately agreeing a permanent contract.

15 appearances
4 assists
2 big chances created
85% accurate passes
1.8 tackles per game
3.9 balls recovered per game
1.3 key passes per game

Fabrizio Romano revealed two weeks ago that Norwich triggered the £2.4 million transfer of Wright, and now he’s been officially announced as their first signing of the summer.

After putting pen to paper on a four-year deal, sporting director Ben Knapper spoke of his delight, lauding his ‘huge’ potential.

“Jacob has been fantastic since joining us back in January, and his impact and performances made this an easy decision for us to make,” Knapper said.

“He has established himself as a key member of our group already, and his potential is huge. Not only is he a very talented player, he has big leadership qualities and we’re all excited to continue working with him to help him achieve his potential and support us in striving towards our goals as a club.”

What Wright said after becoming a Norwich player

The Man City academy gem became an instant hit at Norwich, with his vision, technique and energy all being standout attributes.

After impressing for the Championship side, he’s now eager to continue his journey, outlining his excitement over the move.

“I’m really excited, this is what I wanted when I moved here,” Wright said. “The last couple of months that I’ve spent here have cemented my feelings towards the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here and hopefully that journey can now continue.”

If the rest of the Canaries’ signings are of similar quality to Wright, Norwich could be in for an exciting summer.
