EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal the latest information regarding Richie Smallwood’s future after leaving Bradford City on a free transfer.
It was announced earlier today that Smallwood would depart after three years with the Bantams. The 34-year-old did not agree to new terms with the club and he has decided to leave for a new opportunity.
It’s a blow for a side who were among the three teams to win automatic promotion from League Two in 2024/25, with some optimism that the West Yorkshire outfit can establish themselves in League One next term.
But we can reveal further details about the future of Smallwood, with the ex-Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, and Rotherham United man interesting numerous EFL sides in the third and fourth tier.

Richie Smallwood interest emerges from seven League One and League Two sides
Bradford’s promotion celebrations are over, meaning attention can turn to ensuring they can compete in League One. Smallwood’s presence in the run-in was vital, though, and they will be rebuilding without him.
Speaking exclusively to EFL Analysis, our transfer expert Graeme Bailey has told us the veteran midfielder is being eyed by some of Bradford’s League One rivals already.
We understand a host of clubs are chasing the Bradford City captain after leaving Valley Parade.
Smallwood — who was named the club’s Player of the Year as he helped them to promotion — has failed to agree terms on a new deal and is now on the move.
A host of clubs are keen on the former Middlesbrough man with Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, and newly-promoted duo Doncaster Rovers and AFC Wimbledon amongst those to have shown an interest.
It doesn’t stop there, with MK Dons, Chesterfield, and Fleetwood Town in League Two also thought to be keen on the 34-year-old midfielder.
A seasoned central midfielder with vast experience, Smallwood has played at a much higher level, including the Championship with Hull and Blackburn Rovers.
Known for his leadership, he has been the heartbeat of Bradford’s midfield, and he was quickly appointed club captain. His experience makes him a crucial figure for Bradford, guiding the squad both on and off the pitch.
His know-how and leadership is a loss, but it’s not all disappointing news for Bradford, as Graham Alexander’s side are also closing in on Curtis Tilt.

Richie Smallwood sends message to Bradford City supporters
Our early prediction for the 2025/26 League One campaign has Bradford pegged as a potential surprise package. But Smallwood was a huge presence in the dressing room and he leaves a huge gap to fill.
He penned the message below to Bradford supporters, having achieved his goal with the club from 2022.
Smallwood said: “Three years ago, I made the decision to leave the Championship and join Bradford City in League Two. The objective was clear: promotion.
“This one means so much because of the journey we’ve been on and the way we made it happen.
“My time at Bradford City is now coming to an end. My contract will expire shortly, and the Club has made the decision not to offer a renewal.
“I want to sincerely thank the fans for the unwavering support you’ve shown me and my family during my time here. I wish you nothing but success
“Football is a transient industry, players come and go, but the memories we create can last a lifetime.”
