Middlesbrough have accepted a deal in principle from Ipswich Town for Hayden Hackney, EFL Analysis can confirm.

We first reported back in March that Hayden Hackney was likely to leave Middlesbrough this summer if the team failed to make the top six.

This summer, Hayden Hackney has changed agents ahead of eyeing a move away from the Riverside Stadium.

A host of top-flight clubs around Europe have shown interest in the Middlesbrough player, but Ipswich Town are now trying to sign him.

Middlesbrough accept deal in principle for Hayden Hackney

Middlesbrough fans laughed off Hackney to Ipswich earlier this month when the links first emerged, given they are now a Championship club.

And while the player hasn’t made his mind up over a transfer yet, Boro have accepted a deal in principle from the Tractor Boys.

After speaking to our transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis understands that Kieran McKenna has spoken with the player in order to persuade him to make the move.

£15m plus add-ons will take the deal to £20m and has been accepted in principle by Middlesbrough.

Hackney wanted to be playing in the top-flight next season – Premier League or foreign.

The midfielder is now deciding what to do, but Ipswich are confident they can persuade him.

Will Middlesbrough replace Hayden Hackney

We revealed previously that Middlesbrough were close to signing Abdoulaye Kante, and his transfer was confirmed on Tuesday.

However, the former Ligue 2 player will not be a direct replacement for the Redcar-born ace.

It’s understood that Middlesbrough will look to sign another midfielder after Hackney leaves, with Kante’s transfer happening regardless.

No names are strongly linked with the Teessiders at the moment.
