In just two days’ time, Birmingham City welcome Ipswich Town to St. Andrew’s in the Championship season opener.

The Tractor Boys have been looking for a replacement for Liam Delap ever since his £30m move to Chelsea, with George Hirst and Ali Al-Hamadi the only other two options up front for Kieran McKenna.

Meanwhile, the ever-ambitious Blues have been trying to make another statement signing this summer in the form of Chuba Akpom, as Chris Davies looks to add to his forward department.

However, an update has now emerged regarding the winner of the transfer battle for the 29-year-old who plays for Ajax.

Middlesbrough showed an interest in Akpom over the weekend, but it looked as though Birmingham were going to win the battle.

However, Ipswich swooped in with an offer of their own and now Anthony Joseph has reported that the Tractor Boys are the last team standing in this three-way transfer battle.

A return to Boro looked very unlikely, and Akpom has his heart set on a move to Portman Road, with Blues pulling out of the race.

Ajax are now finalising the last details of the deal with Ipswich, as the final preparations are made for their game against Birmingham.

Friday’s clash will now have an extra edge to it

Friday’s game is already hotly anticipated, with one of last year’s relegated Premier League clubs facing the side who romped to the League One title in a record-breaking campaign.

However, with Akpom looking likely to be on the books of Ipswich by the time the first whistle goes, there will be another reason to keep an eye on this game.

It seems unlikely that the ex-Arsenal man will be involved at St. Andrew’s, but Tractor Boys supporters will feel as though they have taken a mental advantage ahead of the match, while Birmingham will be looking for the last laugh.

Either way, there will be fireworks in the West Midlands on Friday evening.
