Ryan Mason reveals new ‘massive role’ for West Brom star ahead of Middlesbrough match

Ryan Mason has admitted that he understands that there are a lack of options for him to select from due to his limited squad at West Brom.

The Baggies manager believes that players will have to be able to adapt as the season goes on, as the need to cover for injuries will become important later in the campaign.

While West Brom have made a fantastic start to the Championship season, it may get harder, as it is expected that Mason’s squad will get stretched, like every other club in the division.

Tom Fellows has explained that he left West Brom to join Southampton for Premier League football; however, the Baggies are closer to achieving this at this point, but Mason has admitted he will need players to be flexible with their position to achieve that ambition.

Callum Styles may be used in the West Brom midfield by Ryan Mason

Callum Styles has been used at left-back during the tenure of Ryan Mason so far; however, the West Brom manager has admitted he may be the Baggies star that will be rotated throughout the team due to his versatility.

Mason believes that Styles could be used in midfield by West Brom, like he does for his national team, Hungary, because of the signing of Charlie Taylor at full back.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Mason said: “We’ve got four really good, solid midfielders that we know we can work with and keep pushing on; obviously Stylesy has played there as well for his national team.

“There is a bit of flexibility; the challenge is to keep everyone in a good place, and hopefully everyone can contribute, because we know how many games there are in this league. Everyone has a massive role to play.”

Ryan Mason reflects on the depth of the West Brom squad

While West Brom did add to their squad this summer, there were also several departures, as they lost Darnell Furlong and Tom Fellows to clubs that were relegated from the Premier League last season.

This may indicate that they believe that both Ipswich Town and Southampton are more likely to earn promotion from the Championship this season.

West Brom fans will be hopeful they can be among those battling for the play-offs; however, this could be difficult with a limited squad.

Mason admitted this to the Express and Star, as he said: “We’re not blessed with an incredible amount of numbers in terms of loads of players and options, but the options we do have we feel happy with. They have all got different strengths and different attributes.”
