Sheffield United and Ruben Selles break unwanted 30-year record after Middlesbrough defeat

Sheffield United have once again suffered defeat in the Championship this season, as Middlesbrough claimed a 1-0 win.

Rob Edwards has guided Middlesbrough to their best start to a Championship campaign in 31 years, as they have made it four wins from as many matches, with the Teesside club going up as champions that campaign.

Fans will hope that can be repeated this season, as Middlesbrough hope to make a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

While Middlesbrough are loving life under their new manager, it is not rosy for their opponents, as Sheffield United have once again failed to win under Ruben Selles.

The Spanish manager has now achieved an unwanted record, as he has now lost his fifth game this season across both domestic cup and league competitions.

Sheffield United’s worst start to a Championship season in 30 years

Ruben Selles has now overseen the worst start in 30 years to a campaign outside the top flight for Sheffield United, as they have lost four Championship fixtures in a row.

This last happened for the 1995/96 campaign, and it is not the start that the Blades would have envisaged under Ruben Selles.

The controversial decision to remove Chris Wilder and to replace him with the former Hull City manager has not worked out at this point.

There have already been some calls in the fan base to remove Selles as the boss of Sheffield United, with a controversial call to replace him with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

The 1995/96 Sheffield United campaign

It is interesting viewing the 1995/96 Sheffield United campaign, a start that Ruben Selles has now emulated.

Ruben Selles will not look upon that campaign fondly, as the manager who began that season, Dave Bassett, did not make it to New Year’s, as he was replaced in December.

The Spanish manager will need to see a sharp change if he does not want to experience the same fate, while Sheffield United fans will hope it changes soon too, as that season the Blades finished ninth, nowhere near the play-off positions.
