Southampton have been busy in the transfer market ahead of the deadline on September 1 as they look to strengthen their squad for the Championship campaign.

The Saints have lofty ambitions for the season, so the loss of Tyler Dibling to Everton and Mateus Fernandes to West Ham will have been a major inconvenience.

However, Southampton have recently signed both Finn Azaz and Tom Fellows, the latter letting fans know why he left West Brom to join the Saints.

Will Still will be pleased with these additions as the squad starts to take shape under him; however, the Saints don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, as they have been linked with further additions.

Southampton after Elias Jelert

It has been reported in the Southern Daily Echo that the Saints are after the signing of Elias Jelert from Galatasaray.

The Danish international has made three appearances at international level, and the Saints are after a loan deal for the full back, with this deal likely meaning James Bree will exit the club.

Bree is not the only player expected to depart Southampton before the end of the transfer window, with Charlie Taylor, Sam Edozie, Will Smallbone, Ben Brereton Diaz and Joe Aribo all rumoured to leave.

Jelert is a versatile option at full-back, being able to play on both sides of the pitch, meaning he can provide competition for Ryan Manning too, who has recently been called up for the Republic of Ireland squad.

The reason behind this move for the Danish international is an immediate reaction to the news of the lengthy lay-off for Welington after his ankle injury.

As first reported in Turkey, Southampton are lining up a move for the Galatasaray full-back, who could be their second Danish signing after Mads Roerslev.

The 22-year-old has made 25 appearances for Turkish giants Galatasaray, across all competitions, since joining the club from Copenhagen in 2024.

Copenhagen were devastated he left for Galatasaray

Jelert emerged through the youth teams of the Danish giants Copenhagen, and while at the club earned his first international call-up, and when he opted to leave for Turkey, they were sad he was leaving but were supportive.

Sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen explained to club media: “We have known Elias since he joined as a boy, and from day one, his passion for football was evident.

“But he is also a player who has fought for his place through the youth ranks, and that has strengthened him.

“Combined with the right framework in our talent department, we have collectively succeeded in creating the right platform for Elias.

“He is a strong example of the fundamental philosophy of F.C. Copenhagen: creating space and opportunity for development.

“Elias has received a solid foundation from our Talent Department, but he also has a special attitude that has made him a profile in the first team.

“He has won championships and cups, played in the Champions League, and even made his debut for the Danish national team. Now the time has come to take the next step in his career. It’s completely natural.”
