The on-loan Sunderland shot-stopper registered his first clean sheet of the season for Salford City in a 1-0 win over Newport County.
Salford City have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2025/26 season under manager Karl Robinson.
In the League Two curtain-raiser, Salford lost 3-1 at home to Crewe Alexandra, but have since gone on a three-game winning streak in the fourth tier and sit fourth in the table.
After finishing eighth last season, the Ammies are intent on going one better this term and solidifying a top-six finish, and on-loan Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young will be crucial to that quest.
Salford lost Will Wright to Liverpool, but have made some solid signings this summer, namely the return of the Black Cats starlet, who made some exciting comments after Salford’s latest win.

Sunderland loanee Matty Young comments on Salford City win vs Newport County
After returning on loan for the second consecutive campaign, Young set promotion goals for Salford this season, and the Ammies have made a stellar start on course to a top-six finish.
Many Sunderland supporters dub Academy of Light graduate Young as a potential future Black Cats number one, following his outstanding breakout in senior football at National League Darlington, the England youth sides, and now for Salford.
The 18-year-old was in brilliant form in Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Newport County, making three crucial saves to register his first clean sheet of the season to play a pivotal role in the Ammies’ third league win in a row.
After the game, Young told Salford’s media: “We had unity and we did well just to see the game out and I feel like that just goes a long way.
“It’s my job to make saves, it’s crucial when those moments do have those little snapshots.
“Tonight, I’ve made three crucial saves and that’s kept the clean sheet. But also, you’ve got to put praise on the defence, and the midfield and the strikers as well.
“As a team, we’ve defended really well. We’ve kept our shape. We’ve got really good team spirit; we’re on a high at the minute.
“We just have to keep this momentum going. We had a spell last year, where we went on quite a good win streak, so high hopes that we keep going and follow something similar to that.”

Sunderland loanee Matty Young will be pivotal to Salford City’s promotion push
Young made a name for himself in the EFL last season with the Ammies, featuring 27 times in all competitions, including the 8-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Another difficult test approaches for the Ammies this weekend with the trip to Walsall on Saturday afternoon.
With Young highly-rated by onlooking Sunderland supporters, as well as the Black Cats staff and hierarchy, the young goalkeeper will be hoping to continue his impressive upward trajectory and stake a claim to be part of Regis Le Bris’ first-team plans from next season onwards.
