Wrexham have endured a winless start to the 2025/26 season, but that could all change with the Red Dragons’ imminent arrival.

Wrexham have suffered a rude awakening so far in their first season back in the Championship.

On opening weekend, Southampton beat Wrexham 2-1 thanks to two late goals from Ryan Manning and a Jack Stephens winner that completed the comeback win in Will Still’s maiden second tier clash in charge.

At the weekend, West Brom beat Wrexham 3-2 at the Racecourse to make it zero points from the first six on offer for Phil Parkinson.

Throughout the summer transfer window, Hollywood-backed Wrexham have made several headline-grabbing signings, and that trend is set to continue with a name familiar in the Championship.

Wrexham to sign Callum Doyle from Manchester City after Norwich City loan

After earning promotion from League One, Wrexham have brought a litany of impressive signings to Wales.

The likes of club-record signing Nathan Broadhead, Lewis O’Brien, Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, and former Sheffield Wednesday hero Josh Windass have all made the Wrexham move this summer.

With Parkinson’s trademark back-three system, central defenders are an imperative position for the Dragons, and Wrexham are now set to make one of the Championship signings of the summer with the imminent arrival of Callum Doyle.

Doyle spent last season on loan at Norwich City, scoring once and assisting seven times in 40 Championship appearances for the Canaries, but he has since been deemed surplus to requirements at parent club Manchester City.

Reports emerged earlier in the window that Man City wanted £12.7m for Doyle to leave the Etihad permanently after four successive seasons out on loan, but now the Dragons are set to sign the 21-year-old for just £8m.

Jordan Campbell of The Athletic revealed: “Wrexham are closing in on the signing of Callum Doyle in a deal worth up to £8million.

“Sheffield United and Rangers were both interested 21-year-old centre-back, who has spent the last four seasons on loan at Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich.

“However, Rangers are no longer in the running. Location is thought to be a factor for Doyle, who lives in Manchester.”

Wrexham’s imminent capture of Doyle flexes their financial muscle at the expense of Rangers and Sheffield United, but also sends a warning to Championship rivals regarding their prospects this season.

Callum Doyle trend sends Wrexham warning to Championship rivals

After Wrexham’s winless start to the season, the imminent arrival of Doyle proves that the Dragons are not going to stand by and witness sub-standard performances without making further improvements to Parkinson’s squad.

In three out of Doyle’s four loan spells away from Man City, the young defender has been part of a side either challenging for or winning promotion.

Barring his Canaries stint last season, Doyle won promotion with Sunderland in the 2021/22 League One season after their play-off final win over Wycombe Wanderers.

The following season at Coventry, Doyle’s loan side were beaten in the Championship play-off final by Luton Town.

In the following season, Doyle was part of the Leicester side that stormed to the Championship title win.

Amid his loan spell last term, Norwich skipper Kenny McLean told Man City of Doyle: “When he’s on the ball and is progressing and steps into midfield and plays a forward pass, he’s incredible at it.”

Wrexham’s signing of such an impressive, highly coveted talent is a stark reminder to their Championship rivals that the Dragons are still intent on challenging for promotion this season despite their slow start, which will certainly ramp up as a result of Doyle’s arrival.
