West Brom ensured a 27-year-old record would not be broken with victory over Stoke City

West Brom continued their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stoke City, as they climbed to second in the division.

Only Middlesbrough are higher than them in the Championship, with Rob Edwards guiding the club to their best start in the second tier for 31 years.

Mark Robins will be disappointed by the manner in which Stoke City lost to West Brom, as it was through a goalkeeping error, with fans letting their feelings be known about this on social media.

The victory now means that West Brom and their fans can continue to dream about a return to the Premier League throughout the international break, a division they have not played in since 2021.

However, they will also be happy they did not allow a 29-year record to be broken with their victory over Stoke City.

Stoke City were denied four opening victories in a row

West Brom denied Stoke City the chance to win their opening four games of a season for the first time in 27 years.

The last time Stoke City achieved this feat was in 1998 when the Potters were in the third tier of English football.

While Stoke City fans will be disappointed that they could not achieve this piece of history and for losing to West Brom, it will not be viewed as the end of the world by Potters fans.

Stoke City fans may look at the signing of Tomas Rigo on the morning of the fixture between West Brom and themselves as a consolation for not earning three more points in the Championship ahead of the international break.

Stoke City’s 1998/99 season

Stoke City, Mark Robins and the club’s fans may actually have breathed a sigh of relief that they did not win four consecutive games to start a season to emulate their 1998/99 season, as it was not a memorable campaign.

This may have been the high point of the 1998/99 campaign, as the club would finish eighth in the third tier and fail to gain promotion.

Stoke won the opening six games of that campaign, but after November, following an incredible start, their form would drop off a cliff, and so they would fall down the table.
