Sheffield United and Cardiff City face each other at Bramall Lane on Friday in a must win encounter for both sides involved.
Third bottom play third from top in the Championship, with huge points up for grabs for both teams in their respective seasons. The Blades have lost three on the bounce, meaning their promotion hopes have taken a huge hit.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 42 | 25 | 13 | 4 | 82 | 29 | 53 | 88 | |
| 2 | 42 | 24 | 16 | 2 | 57 | 13 | 44 | 88 | |
| 3 | 42 | 26 | 7 | 9 | 57 | 33 | 24 | 83 | |
| 4 | 42 | 21 | 13 | 8 | 57 | 38 | 19 | 76 |
Cardiff could be cut adrift if Derby County beat Luton Town in the early kick-off, with the Bluebirds having drawn three of their last four games. That includes a damaging defeat to Stoke City on Saturday to leave them inside the relegation zone.
History could be made for either of these historic clubs via a late season charge to ensure their goals are met, but at least one side will be left disappointed and make it a particularly Bad Friday on Good Friday. The loser is unlikely to be able to turn things around, while a draw does very little for either team.

Neil Warnock’s Chris Wilder verdict ahead of Sheffield United vs Cardiff City
Neil Warnock’s blueprint has rarely deviated, and he is a manager that knows plenty about this fixture and these two clubs. Warnock’s managerial career spans over four decades and is one of the most decorated in English football, particularly in the EFL, where his reputation as a promotion specialist is cemented.
That Sheffield United side of his had serious fight. It wasn’t always loved by outsiders but it was feared by opponents. Something similar was also developed by Warnock in South Wales. It was hard-fought football for the modern age and he came up against Chris Wilder in a 2017 clash.
Speaking via Wales Online in 2017, Warnock explained his Cardiff side and how it compared to his Blades team. He said: “Because we had a team spirit similar to what we’ve got here (at Cardiff).
“And you don’t get forgotten. It’s history, isn’t it? Seven years I was there and we set out to be the best club in Sheffield to start with. To think when I took over it was 8,000 crowds and when I left it was 25,500 average. A new stadium almost, new training ground, a fabulous time of my life really.
“But I’ve moved on now, I’ve only got winning for Cardiff in my mind because I’m afraid life’s catching up with me and I’ve got to think about tomorrow nowadays.”
A proud South Yorkshireman, Warnock came up against a younger Wilder that day. He was full of praise for someone who he shares a love for the club with. He added: “In Chris Wilder, I’m pleased they saw a bit of sense rather than taking too many managers since I left.
“Somebody who cares, someone who’s been there and played for them, somebody who knows what they’re doing and who motivates. That’s why it will be a hard game but I’m looking forward to it.”
Like Wilder, he is a manager who cares and motivates. It’s why the two clubs were so similar at that time and why Warnock has fitted both like a hand in glove. The same is distinctly true of Wilder over his two stints in charge of the Blades so far.
Their recent wobble at the business end of the season during the run-in could not have been timed much worse, but Wilder is a manager who has proven to be worth his salt. He has shown signs of frustration at full-time vs Plymouth and head loss in recent interviews, with some ageing badly for Wilder.
Now, he has to get his head back in the game and showcase why he is also a renowned promotion specialist in the EFL himself against another of Warnock’s former clubs. It will be a tough watch for Warnock, who will be willing both of his former clubs to gain promotion and achieve survival respectively.

Neil Warnock’s record at Sheffield United and Cardiff City
Warnock has earned a record eight promotions across various clubs, with his direct and effective style leaving a lasting impression, as well as his larger than life personality and man management style. Warnock first made his mark with Notts County in the early 1990s, guiding them to back-to-back promotions from the Third Division to the First Division.
However, it was at his boyhood club Sheffield United where he enjoyed one of his longest and most significant spells, managing from 1999 to 2007. He led his side to the Premier League in 2006, which was a crowning achievement in his career despite their immediate relegation the following season.
Another standout chapter came at Queens Park Rangers, where he took over in 2010 and steered them to the Championship title in 2010/11, securing automatic promotion to the Premier League. He later repeated the feat with Cardiff City in 2018, proving his knack for maximising a squad’s potential.
| Team | Start | End | Games | Won | Drawn | Lost | Win % |
| Sheffield United | 2 December 1999 | 16 May 2007 | 385 | 165 | 98 | 122 | 42.86 |
| Cardiff City | 5 October 2016 | 11 November 2019 | 144 | 59 | 29 | 56 | 40.97 |
His longevity and no-nonsense approach have made him one of the EFL’s most memorable figures. The 76-year-old has managed no fewer than 15 professional clubs and is now a pundit on Sky Sports on occasion. But his record at both clubs makes him an iconic figure in each of their recent histories.
