Sheffield United failed to bounce back from consecutive 1-0 defeats at Home Park by losing to Plymouth Argyle 2-1 in matchday 42 of the Championship.
Chris Wilder rang the changes, as we predicted with Callum O’Hare’s return to the line-up, but it was Jesurun Rak-Sakyi who came in and scored upon his return to get the opener with a sublime finish.

After Burnley’s win over Norwich City last night, the pressure was placed on Leeds United and Sheffield United to keep pace, especially with so many Championship fans changing their tune about the promotion picture.
Miron Muslic believed his side would win the clash at Home Park at lunchtime, but pundits were backing the Blades to return to form with a win in the sunshine down in Devon. However, Plymouth pulled out a late win against the South Yorkshire outfit to put promotion firmly in Leeds and Burnley hands.

The reaction to Sheffield United’s 2-1 loss to Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth had won three of their last six home league games to offer some hope prior to kick-off. The reverse fixture ended 2-0 but Wayne Rooney’s side impressed for much of the game, with Wilder caused some problems.
Plymouth were always likely to aim for a low-margin game and to make it scrappy, with a ‘tough watch’ expected by Wilder. A scrappy Championship game opened up via Rak-Sakyi’s moment of inspiration but Ryan Hardie and Muhamed Tijani.
Miron Muslic’s side granted his wish and Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United fans are loving it. One said: “This Sheffield United bottling has to be the worst since…last year when Leeds did it.”
Another Wednesday fan said: “Michael Cooper has conceded more goals at Home Park than James Beadle.”
One Leeds fan said: “BLADES, BLADES ARE FALLING APART AGAINNNNN.”
Sheffield United fans summed up their mood: “0 points against Oxford, Millwall and Plymouth. EMBARRASSING.”

Leeds United’s win against Preston puts them in charge at the top
Given that Sheffield United travel to Burnley in the run-in, Leeds United are now in the driving seat in the Championship automatic promotion race.
Goals from Manor Solomon and Jayden Bogle were enough for Leeds after Kaine Kesler-Hayden’s equaliser. The Whites had 20 shots worth 3.71xG in total. They were back to their very best in a crunch match late in the season.
The same cannot be said of Sheffield United after losing three on the bounce for the first time all season. They mustered just eight shots worth 0.52xG, which was not the way to turn things on at this point in the campaign.
They can still win automatic promotion by beating Burnley at Turf Moor. However, no matter what happens in that game, Leeds are now in the driving seat. Daniel Farke’s side are not falling apart again. Opta believe they have a 98.32% chance of automatic promotion.
