Championship fans all say the same thing about the title race after Leeds United ‘choke’ at Portsmouth

Against the odds, Portsmouth defeated Leeds United today, and Championship fans have changed their tune about the title race now.

Leeds United went into the game at Fratton Park still sitting at the top of the Championship table, but with a lot less breathing room after wins for Sheffield United and Burnley this weekend.

Coming up against a Portsmouth side sitting firmly in the bottom half of the table, you’d have expected this strong Leeds team to come away with three points.

But, the Championship is never straightforward. Experts even predicted a potential ‘slip up’ for Leeds this weekend, and they were proven right.

Portsmouth were able to grind out a 1-0 home win thanks to a goal from Colby Bishop, and it has got fans debating what the final league table will look like come May.

Are Leeds United about to collapse in the title race?

Last season, Leeds fell at the final hurdle, losing in the play-offs to Southampton after being right up there gunning for automatic promotion all year.

This time around, it looked as though Daniel Farke had learned from that experience, and just a few weeks ago, most neutrals believed Leeds were on their way to promotion already.

That’s all changed now, though. Taking to Twitter/X to share their thoughts, various fans seem to be suggesting that the Whites may be about to “choke” and relinquish control of the title race.

One Leeds fan has already given up, admitting “play-offs it is” for the club, while another said, “That’s my confidence of promotion shattered. On our day we’re the best team in the league, but Burnley and Sheffield United win when they’re playing poor which we just can’t seem to do. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if we bottle top two again and they pip it.”

Other supporters out there commented on Leeds’ dip in form, writing, “A lesson in beating your local rivals being fun but redundant if you can’t follow it up with consistent results,” and “Leeds are wobbling, can’t cope with the pressure again.”

One Ipswich Town fan even got in on the fun elsewhere on social media, posting: “Leeds are falling apart again.”

Burnley are the team to watch now – they’re relentless

At this moment in time, it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see Leeds fall into the play-offs and for Sheffield United or Burnley to take the title while the other bags automatic promotion.

All three teams have been by far the strongest in the league this season, with Sunderland just behind them. But, if we had to pick anyone on current form to end up at the top of the pile, it would be Burnley.

Not only are they near-impenetrable at the back, but Burnley have now started scoring plenty, too, making them the perfect team right now.

One thing’s for sure, that clash between Burnley and the Blades on April 21 has just gone from being a battle for second place, to potentially being the title decider.
