Alex Neil outlines what Millwall have done differently this summer as ‘stronger’ claim is made

Millwall made the perfect start to the season on Saturday afternoon as they registered an excellent win away to Norwich City.

The Lions had not won at Carrow Road since 1968 ahead of the weekend’s clash, but goals from Camiel Neghli and Macaulay Langstaff either side of a freak Josh Sargent equaliser handed the visitors all three points.

Langstaff may have turned his career around at the South London outfit after a difficult first year in the Championship, but he is not the only ace to have shown improvements for Millwall.

Alex Neil’s side look to be a dark horse for a play-off place in the second tier, and he has explained what has made his team so much better this season.

After narrowly missing out on the top six last season, this campaign is all about taking that next step as Neil looks to bring Premier League football to The Den.

However, with Millwall making the trip to Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, their head coach has spoken about the improvements his team have made this summer. He said (via: Southwark News): “Better and stronger in the fact that we’ve made guys who weren’t ours permanent.

“Josh Coburn is now our player. Zak Sturge is now our player. Alfie Doughty has now been added into the mix. Massimo Luongo has been added into the mix. The two goalkeepers have been added into the mix.

“The players within our team are our players. We’re not loaning everybody now. I think we had five loans maybe last year. This year, we’ve got one because we still got Lukas Jensen to come back, our goalkeeper who was terrific for us last season.

“Like every manager, you always want to try and be as strong as you possibly can come to the end of the window. So if we can add one or two, that’d be great. If we don’t, I think we’ve got a good squad, and hopefully, we can try and keep them fit.”

The Lions are evolving into a very exciting team

After the confusion surrounding Neil Harris’ departure last season, Alex Neil has come in and made this club his own.

The addition of Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough is particularly exciting after he made a real impact while on loan at The Den in 2024/25.

Meanwhile, Millwall are doing all they can to keep hold of Mihailo Ivanovic and Japhet Tanganga, with these two players crucial to their success in this campaign.

Tuesday evening is about rotation and allowing fringe players the chance to impress, but this could also be the perfect way for Neil to identify where his squad needs strengthening further with three weeks left to go in the transfer window.
