Millwall narrowly missed out on a top six finish last season on the final day, and this time around they are looking to be the dark horses once again.
Supporters are very excited about the signing of Alfie Doughty, with the wide player leaving Luton Town less than a week before their League One campaign gets underway.
Matt Bloomfield slammed the Hatters’ players following relegation back in May, but for the 25-year-old, it’s a fresh start at his boyhood club.
Nevertheless, there will still be high expectations at Millwall, with Mihailo Ivanovic and Japhet Tanganga the subjects of interest from other clubs. Now, Doughty’s new boss has weighed in on his debut and what he can bring to the team going forward.
Alex Neil weighs in on Alfie Doughty after Millwall debut
Able to play just about anywhere on the left flank, the ex-Charlton Athletic man has the chance to be one of the signings of the summer if he can get himself to the same levels that he has shown in the past at Kenilworth Road.

He was excellent for Millwall in their 6-2 pre-season win over Sutton United on Tuesday, picking up two assists and he earned high praise from Alex Neil. He said (via: Southwark News): “What he does is he covers a few positions for us. He’s got real quality in his left foot. You can see that with his pass to Macca [Macaulay Langstaff] for the first goal. He’s got great set-piece delivery.
“He’ll be a real asset for us, whether we use him at left-back, left wing, or right wing. So I think from that perspective, it gives us good options.”
“It’s not by accident that he’s been brought in. We’ve looked at having good targets in the middle of the box and making sure we’ve got quality supply and crosses coming in there. Alfie will certainly help with that respect.”

Alfie Doughty will be hoping to put last season behind him
Fitness issues made it tough for Doughty to find any sort of consistency in 2024/25, and the success that he had in the Premier League was scuppered because of this.
Nevertheless, this campaign is a fresh start at a club that he has a huge amount of affection for and he will be doing all he can to end Millwall’s wait for top flight football.

With Ivanovic and Langstaff up front for the Lions, Doughty has two very good targets to aim for with his excellent crossing ability and the assists that he has already picked up are proof of just how important he will be this season.
Millwall are slowly building a very strong team, but they perhaps do need one or two more new faces through the door at The Den ahead of the Championship campaign.
