The third round of the Carabao Cup is upon us, and for Barnsley, there’s an opportunity of a major upset.
The Tykes face Brighton & Hove Albion at Oakwell on Tuesday evening as Conor Hourihane looks to transfer his team’s strong start to the season in League One into the cup competition.
It’s been an excellent run so far for the South Yorkshire outfit, with wins over Fleetwood Town and Rotherham United leading them to face one of the Premier League’s most exciting teams in the last few years.
Barnsley made some excellent signings in the summer and on deadline day they added to their squad once again as Jake Rooney joined on loan from Derby County, and he looks likely to start against Brighton. However, there is one issue.
Jake Rooney set to feature for Barnsley vs Brighton in the Carabao Cup
Rooney, who is the cousin of former Manchester United and England striker Wayne, has already featured in the Carabao Cup for Derby this season.

He helped the Rams to a penalty shootout victory over West Bromwich Albion in round one of the competition, before playing 90 minutes of his parent club’s defeat to Burnley. While this would usually see the defender cup-tied, due to an EFL ruling, he can feature against Brighton.
Rule 6.4 states a player may play for a second team in the Carabao Cup on any of these three conditions:
- Has appeared for this parent club in the competition prior to the closure of the summer transfer window and has subsequently moved to a different club on a loan transfer or permanent transfer prior to the end of that summer transfer window.
- Has appeared for his parent club in the competition prior to the closure of the winter transfer window or the first leg of the semi-final and has subsequently moved to a different club on a loan or permanent transfer prior to the closure of the winter transfer window or the first leg of the semi-final.
- Such a player moves on as an emergency goalkeeper loan at any time during the season.

Barnsley have not faced Brighton since 2017 in the Championship
Brighton have been a consistent Premier League side for a number of years now, and you’ll have to go all the way back to 2013 for this pair’s last meeting.
The Seagulls ran out 2-0 winners at Oakwell on that day, repeating their victory at the AMEX earlier in the campaign as they went on to win automatic promotion to the top flight.

However, it is Barnsley who have the better overall record, picking up 17 wins compared to Brighton’s 16, while this fixture has ended in a draw on 10 separate occasions, as per 11v11.com.
Rooney will be hoping that he can help his team to an 18th win over the south coast outfit on Tuesday evening, as he prepares for his third Carabao Cup appearance of the season, but his first for the Tykes.
