Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan is currently out of contract, and the Owls faithful are fearing his potential exit.

Sheffield Wednesday are in a financial and footballing crisis heading into the 2025/26 Championship season, with little light at the end of the tunnel.

With their season kick-off clash against Leicester City only one week away, pre-season preparations at Wednesday have been dwarfed by the economic turmoil at the club under Dejphon Chansiri.

Head coach Danny Rohl left Sheffield Wednesday after months of speculation, alongside several high-profile Owls stars.

Wednesday captain, Barry Bannan, remains out of contract at the Owls, and the Scotsman has now broken his silence on the club’s crisis with an emotional social media post.

Despite being out of contract since June 30, Bannan has continued to train with Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the upcoming campaign.

After Bannan revealed his thoughts on Sheffield Wednesday’s season, it emerged that two Championship rivals are “considering making a move” for the 35-year-old.

Middlesbrough and Millwall are interested in Bannan, with the Scotsman yet to be offered a new deal in S6 by Chansiri despite ten years of impressive service to the Owls.

Now, with uncertainty hanging over Hillsborough and Bannan’s future, the magical midfielder has broken his silence on the Sheffield Wednesday crisis with a heartfelt message seemingly aimed at the supporters.

Bannan said on Instagram: “Remember, no storm lasts forever. Hold on. Be brave. Have faith.

“Every storm is temporary and we’re never alone.”

Losing Bannan could be the final straw for many Sheffield Wednesday supporters, and rightly so given the Scotsman’s importance to the Owls over recent seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday will be relegation favourites if Barry Bannan leaves

Bannan will turn 36-years-old during the upcoming campaign, but there is still vast amounts of talent in his ageing legs, as seen in another outstanding season in the heart of Sheffield Wednesday’s midfield.

Last season, Bannan scored four goals and notched six assists in 45 outings, taking his Owls tally to 35 goals and 73 assists in 447 games after arriving from Crystal Palace in 2015.

The Scotsman was imperative to the Owls’ promotion from League One back to the Championship, and will be equally important next season in the inevitable fight against relegation.

Bannan has been tipped for a player-coach role at Sheffield Wednesday by one Owls reporter, which is seen as a method to retain his services beyond the summer amid the interest from Millwall and Boro in his signature for his swansong.

Chansiri must act imminently and offer Bannan new terms at the Owls before it is too late to keep hold of him, in a move which could cause a mutiny at Hillsborough.
