Sheffield United were busy on transfer deadline day as they looked to strengthen their squad following their poor start to the Championship campaign.
The Blades brought in Chiedozie Ogbene on loan from Championship rivals Ipswich Town, with the Irish international looking to get back to playing after his season-ending injury last year for the Tractor Boys.
Ruben Selles also saw the departure of veteran defender Jack Robinson on the former Liverpool player’s birthday, as he made the move to Birmingham City.

While he left the club, meaning there was an absence at the back, Sheffield United did bring Ben Mee into the team, and the experienced central defender has now explained exactly why he joined the Blades.
Ben Mee is looking to finish his career off on a high
Sheffield United have signed Ben Mee on a one-year deal, with the hope being that he can add some experience and guidance to the defence of the Blades.
Ruben Selles’ side have struggled in defence to this point in the campaign, and the manager will hope the recent recruits in defence will help them find form after Sheffield United’s worst start to a campaign outside the top flight for 31 years.
Mee told the club website: “At my age you just need to carry on to stay fit. I didn’t play many games last season, but I was training all season. I was fit and wanted to keep at that level through the summer, so coming into a group like this has worked out well.
“I’ve come here to get in the team first and foremost, and I obviously want to do well for the group and use my experience and what I’ve learnt to hopefully help this young squad. My hunger is still there, and I have a real motivation to train well, live right and finish my career off positively.”
Ben Mee’s career to this point
The 35-year-old has now joined the fifth club of his career, the fourth permanent side, as he has signed a one-year deal with Sheffield United.
Mee began his career at Manchester City as a youth player, playing one game for them while going on loan to Leicester City in this period at the Sky Blues.
| Club | Appearances | |
| 2010-12 | Manchester City | 1 |
| 2011 | Leicester City | 15 |
| 2012-22 | Burnley | 376 |
| 2022-25 | Brentford | 67 |
| 2025- present | Sheffield United | 0 |
He would then join Burnley, where he would spend 11 seasons, playing across both the Championship and Premier League.
In 2022 Mee would move to London to join Brentford, where he would spend three seasons before leaving them this summer after the expiration of his contract, and now he has joined Sheffield United in what is expected to be the last club of his career.
