Birmingham City Director of Football Craig Gardner has made the Blues’ Championship aims clear with his latest words.

Last season, Birmingham City stormed to the League One title with ease, brushing aside everyone, including Wrexham, to notch a record-breaking 111 points.

As the 2025/26 Championship campaign draws closer, there is no reason why Birmingham cannot follow up on that success from last season.

Birmingham’s ambition has been clear throughout the summer window so far, with the Blues set to sign Demarai Gray.

Optimism is high amongst the fans, and that has come from the club which has made their ambitions clear for next season, with Birmingham Director of Football Craig Gardner making his aspirations for 2025/26 very clear.

Birmingham City Director of Football Craig Gardner makes ‘promotion’ ambition clear

There is no doubt that Birmingham City are one to watch next season because of the ambition they have shown since Tom Wagner arrived at the club. The ambition and willingness to spend to reach the next level is abruptly clear throughout the club, with Craig Gardner making a prediction regarding ‘promotion’ for the upcoming campaign.

“From the first minute against Ipswich, to the last minute of the season, our benchmark is promotion,” said Gardner at a recent supporters’ group meeting. “Believe in it, talk it into existence!”

Birmingham City fans all believe promotion is on the cards in the upcoming season, and based on the business that the Blues are set to do this summer, you cannot blame them for that optimism.

Championship relegation was the best thing to happen to the Blues

When Birmingham City were relegated in the 2023/24 Championship season, fans were not down-and-out, but were rather optimistic ahead of the new campaign, a strange reaction from a fanbase whose side had just dropped divisions. But, in hindsight, they were absolutely correct.

Birmingham needed that one season away from the Championship to rebuild and pick up some momentum, which they have managed to do with flying colours.

As they now approach the 2025/26 Championship season, ticket sales are through the roof, and ambition is seeping into every corner of the club. Just like Ipswich Town were able to do recently, Birmingham will be keen to notch a second successive promotion, and with the signings they look set to make, that would be far from a surprise.
