Birmingham City fans are in complete agreement, Chris Davies made fatal error at Wembley that cost Blues EFL Trophy

Birmingham City have been beaten 2-0 by Peterborough United in the EFL trophy final.

The Blues’ hopes of a league and cup double suffered a fatal blow at Wembley as Peterborough came out top thanks to two brilliant first-half goals.

Harley Mills gave the Posh the lead in the 15th minute with a sublime free-kick, before Hector Kyprianou added a second before the half-time whistle.

Despite being the top goalscorers in League One, Birmingham failed to land a significant blow on their Vertu Trophy opponents – something which Blues fans believe is down to an error from Chris Davies.

Birmingham fans say Alfie May should have started

Troy Deeney praised Jay Stansfield prior to kick-off but the former Fulham wasn’t able to make an impact at Wembley.

Willum Thor Williamson would start behind Stansfield in attack, he however was also largely absent against the Posh, leaving fans to criticise Davies’ decision to start the Icelandic attacker.

Taking to social media, Blues supporters have claimed Alfie May should have started in the final instead of the likes of Williamson or Stansfield.

One fan said via X (formerly Twitter): “45 mins too late. WW not suited to English football. Too slow, weak & lacks aggression. All standard requirements to compete in the English leagues.”

A third fan said: “Slow, laboured build up, very predictable. Need May on and stretch them. All very comfortable. Fair play, took opportunities well.”

“That’ll be Alfie May on imminently I’d imagine. Thought Thor looked decent early but faded. Dowell struggled. Paik and Iwata probably the worst they’ve been for a while, neither getting their foot on it. Two fullbacks not getting any joy whatsoever,” added another supporter.

Chris Davies may regret Alfie May decision

May made a rallying cry to Birmingham supporters prior to the final, so he would no doubt be gutted to see himself put on the bench by manager Davies.

With three goals in his last two League One appearances, it was no surprise that Blues supporters were left slightly baffled at the attacking selection from the Birmingham boss.

Still, in the early stages of his managerial career, Davies may look back on the May decision as one to learn from moving forward.
