Birmingham City secured promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking thanks to a 2-1 win against Peterborough United, with Alfie May on the scoresheet again.
After spending big in the summer, it was always likely Birmingham would be the team to beat in League One this season. May was one of two strikers they made a huge move on — and both Jay Stansfield and May have helped fire them to promotion.
| Position | Club | Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goal Difference | Points |
| 1 | Birmingham City | 40 | 29 | 8 | 3 | 44 | 95 |
| 2 | Wrexham | 41 | 24 | 9 | 8 | 27 | 81 |
| 3 | Wycombe Wanderers | 41 | 22 | 12 | 7 | 29 | 78 |
| 4 | Stockport County | 41 | 21 | 11 | 9 | 24 | 74 |
Experts have questioned aspects of Stansfield as an addition, while other Sky Sports pundits have been impressed by Birmingham’s ‘vanity project’. But May has also chipped in, especially of late. May has started just 24 times in the league this season, scoring 14 and assisting another eight.
Eight of those goal involvements have come in the last six outings, with four against Barnsley last time out and one last night to get Birmingham off the mark. His 24 goal involvements in all competitions overall is sure to be added to as Blues look to win the EFL Trophy and in the final six league fixtures.

Alfie May sends message to Birmingham City fans after promotion
Birmingham have been breaking records all season, and after an impressive pair of wins in back-to-back games, they’ve finally clinched their place back in the Championship for 2025/26 by picking up three points away at Peterborough.
In a dress rehearsal for this weekend’s Vertu Trophy final, and we have outlined both sides’ route to Wembley, it was a goal from May that gave Birmingham the lead. They were pegged back moments later by a Kwame Poku strike to level the scores.
However, as we’ve grown accustomed to this season, Chris Davies’ side dug in and went again to take the lead, with Taylor Gardner-Hickman firing his side ahead after 37 minutes. That’s how it remained from there for Blues. May then reacted at full-time via the League One’s X account.
He said: “Yes, the Bluenoses! Get in there! Job done to get promoted.
“Now, to win the league. Let’s go!
“Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be, we’re going to Wembley!
“Get in!”
Sometimes, Blues have had to find a way to win ugly, but they’ve almost always got the job done. For many, that’s the mark of true champions at the business end of a season. They’ve got the job done and allowed themselves to focus on other matters with some of the pressure off.
Ask a supercomputer and it’ll tell you Birmingham are set to finish with 106.5 points, which will break Wolves’ record points tally (103) from the 2013/14 season. That is one aim, as well as being champions. However, they will also be eyeing the Vertu Trophy, too, to make it a truly memorable campaign.

Birmingham City’s top goalscorers in 2024/25
Tom Brady promised fans good times were forthcoming, and he wasn’t wrong. Between the quality squad Birmingham have assembled, and the excellent work of Chris Davies in getting them to tick during his first full-time role in management, they have been relentless in their march this year.
| Player | Goals | Assists | G+A |
| Alfie May | 15 | 8 | 23 |
| Jay Stansfield | 18 | 2 | 20 |
| Willum Willumson | 5 | 5 | 10 |
| Keshi Anderson | 6 | 4 | 10 |
| Kieran Dowell | 4 | 2 | 6 |
| Ethan Laird | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Tomoki Iwata | 5 | 1 | 6 |
Now May and co. will be eyeing more and more in the second tier, where his side will not wish to just make up the numbers. They will be aiming to surpass what Blues teams of the last ~ten years have done and fight for the play-offs straight away.
In 2016, they finished 10th, with the top half surely the aim for this resurgent Blues side under Davies’ tutelage, where Birmingham are ready to spend big in the summer yet again.
