With everything on the line in one of the biggest games in the Championship season, we kept a close eye on the action to offer up Burnley vs Sheffield United player ratings for each player on the pitch.

A strong start from the Blades had Burnley on edge, but Scott Parker’s side slowly settled into the game and took control of things at Turf Moor.

They had the lead just before the half-hour mark, too, as Josh Brownhill, one of the key players of late, bagged his 15th goal of the season after being first to react to a loose ball in the box.

However, Tom Cannon, who has tested Sheffield United’s patience, finally scored his first goal for the Blades to level the score just eight minutes later.

The action wasn’t done there, though, as Anel Ahmedhodzic brought down livewire Hannibal Mejbri in the box, and Brownhill duly converted the penalty just before half-time to restore the Clarets’ lead.

The second half was a fairly uneventful affair after that action-packed first half, with Burnley doing what was necessary to seal promotion by frustrating their opponents in every area of the pitch.

No more goals to report, but three huge points for Burnley, and Premier League football to look forward to for the Clarets. Here are our Burnley vs Sheffield United player ratings from the big game.

Burnley player ratings

James Trafford – 6

Solid if not a little bit unremarkable. Dealt with everything that came his way with ease. Couldn’t do much about Cannon’s goal.

Connor Roberts – 7

Kept Gus Hamer relatively quiet, with the Sheffield United playmaker having to cut inside from deep to get any luck.

CJ Egan-Riley – 6

Could he have done better to contain Cannon on the way to that Sheffield United goal? Perhaps. Aside from that, a decent showing from the centre-half.

Maxime Eveste – 7

Didn’t put a foot wrong. Some nice progressive play out from the back, a couple of big tackles, and plenty of composure to help Burnley keep United at bay.

Lucas Pires – 7

Ben Brereton Diaz was practically invisible today, and a lot of the credit must go to Pires for keeping him so quiet.

Josh Brownhill – 10

What can we say about the Burnley skipper now? He’s on fire, was the driving force behind the Clarets’ dominance on the day, and bagged another two goals to make all the difference. A perfect display.

Josh Cullen – 8

All credit will go to Brownhill, but we should recognise Josh Cullen’s work alongside him, too. He does the dirty work that allows his teammate to roam forward, and is a key cog in the Burnley machine. The unsung hero of our Burnley vs Sheffield United player ratings.

Marcus Edwards – 7

Lots of good running and clever movement, constantly stretching the Blades’ defence. Caused Harrison Burrows a few problems, but will be disappointed not to have a more meaningful impact.

Hannibal Mejbri – 8

Another top performance from Hannibal who caused United issues all game from his central role. Won the penalty with some smart play, and constantly pushed Burnley forward with progressive carries and neat passing.

Jaidon Anthony – 7

Much like Edwards on the other side, Anthony looked lively, but will wish he had made more of a difference from the wing.

Zion Flemming – 8

He may not have got on the scoresheet, but Flemming did some incredible work leading the line for Burnley. He pressed hard, offered great link-up play, constantly harassed the Sheffield United defenders; a real, traditional number 9 display.

Jeremy Sarmiento – 6

Replaced Hannibal with ten minutes to go. The game was fairly dead by that point, but he did enough to carry on the momentum.

Josh Laurent – 6

Half an hour under his belt. Slipped into the side seamlessly.

Joe Worrall – N/A

On too late to judge appropriately.

Ashley Barnes – N/A

On too late to judge appropriately. But, in fairness, he did some great running and pressing from the front, and even dropped in deep to help his side hold on.

Sheffield United player ratings

Michael Cooper – 6

Maybe should have done better to hold onto the initial strike before Brownhill’s first goal. Not much else he could do on the day, though.

Hamza Choudhury – 7

Not a bad display from the makeshift full-back, who kept Jaidon Anthony relatively quiet.

Anel Ahmedhodzic – 4

Made a really poor error to give away the penalty and it’s ultimately cost his team massively today. A disappointing one from a normally top defender.

Jack Robinson – 5

Also pretty poor in the heart of defence. Couldn’t handle Zion Flemming at all.

Harrison Burrows – 5

Will be gutted to have slipped out wide to allow the ball in for Burnley’s first goal. Struggled to contain Marcus Edwards.

Ben Brereton Diaz – 6

Anonymous out wide. Will be gutted not to have made an impact in a tight, cagey game that felt like it could have suited his play.

Sydie Peck – 6

Solid as always, but the young Blades midfielder definitely lost the battle in the middle of the park, and never quite looked like he was in the flow.

Vini Souza – 6

Similar to his colleague in the middle, this brilliant midfielder was made to look average tonight. Needed to do much more to make a difference for his team.

Gustavo Hamer – 8

United’s best player, as usual. Created the goal nicely, kept running play down the left and into the central areas. Unlucky not to have influenced things more.

Tom Cannon – 7

Fair play for that goal, which came from really impressive movement and running and a delightful finish.

Kieffer Moore – 6

Looked like he might produce something early on, but faded out of the game as time went on.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – 6

Came on with plenty of time to spare, but failed to really influence the game.

Tyrese Campbell – 5

Absolutely drowned out of the game by a solid Burnley defence.

Femi Seriki – 6

Can’t fault his running and effort, but not much of an impact all things considered.

Sam McCallum – 5

Anonymous from the sub. Didn’t make a difference at all for United.

Rhian Brewster – 5

Came on with ten minutes to go, but his only involvement was to pick up a yellow card for a silly foul.
