Sheffield United goals in either half from Sam McCallum and Andre Brooks secured a 2-0 win against Stoke City.
Chris Wilder’s side had lost four of the last five but found a way past Viktor Johansson to secure victory on the penultimate game of the regular league season.
After McCallum’s goal, they had to withstand pressure via Ali Al-Hamadi forcing a fine low save from Michael Cooper in the Blades goal as the hosts pushed for a late equaliser.
Brooks secured the points just under a minute after coming off the bench against Stoke, with the Blades resting Gus Hamer and Ben Brereton-Diaz as they have an eye on making it 10th time lucky in the play-offs.

Sky Sports pundits react to Stoke City 0-2 Sheffield United
Some pundits had even backed Stoke to win, but Sheffield United claimed the points after they came out on top 2-0 despite Wilder’s pre-match frustrations. It was a well-timed boost for his players, as outlined by the Sky punditry team.
The Sky Sports studio comprised of two former Blades in Chris Basham and Michael Brown, as well as Luke Chambers. They spoke to Michelle Owen post-match to provide their thoughts on the 45th Championship game of the Blades’ season.
Basham said: “Fantastic response in a feisty environment. It was a full-blooded game. There’s a smile on my face because I think that’s what the manager would have wanted to see come the end of today’s game. We set the target to get past 90 points and he’s course to do that now.”
Chambers added: “I think it’s been an almost perfect performance and response from Chris Wilder and his team. The selections he’s made have all, sort of, performed in the right way.
“I think he’ll be absolutely delighted. I think that second goal, especially, got them playing with real confidence in that last 5-10 minutes. And it’s what they’re going to take into the final games going into the play-offs. It’s the perfect tonic.”
Brown also responded: “He’s used the squad well. I feel like now, it was a reaction that was needed. He’ll be absolutely delighted after the week they’ve had. He knows it was going to be a tough game because of the relegation situation.
“Now it’s something to build on. The last game — get another good result, gain that momentum, gain that confidence going into the play-offs after a difficult couple of weeks. So, a real positive for Chris Wilder.”
Basham concluded: “It’s so important that they have their fans onside and all pushing in the right direction. I think the manager has got them over their just to clap them because he knows how tough it’s been in April but they’ve finished it off with a nice way tonight.
“It was a tough game. They stood up to the task and came out victorious.”

Chris Wilder’s masterstroke could be the key to play-off win
Stoke fans weren’t happy with Tyrese Campbell’s antics, but the composition of the team was a masterstroke from Wilder, readying his best forward players for what is to come.
Not only that, but bringing in some fringe players from the cold so that they are ensured as being ready for a play-off battle is also vital. The likes of Brooks, Callum O’Hare, and Kieffer Moore got much-needed minutes under their belts.
| Player | Apps | Starts | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
| Gus Hamer | 40 | 35 | 3075 | 9 | 7 |
| Tyrese Campbell | 33 | 20 | 1589 | 10 | 1 |
| Ben Brereton-Diaz | 17 | 13 | 993 | 4 | 3 |
Hamer and Brereton-Diaz are arguably their most potent and dangerous attacking duo alongside Campbell, and having each protected and as fresh as possible for the three most important games of the season is paramount.
Wilder may not be a tactical genius compared to others but his man-management and squad utilisation is absolutely spot on time and time again; it could be what breaks their play-off curse this time.
