Stoke City fans are all furious with Tyrese Campbell following ‘classless’ Sheffield United incident

Tyrese Campbell was booked for diving during Stoke City’s 2-0 loss to Sheffield United.

Sheffield United’s poor play-off record means they were desperate for automatic promotion this term, but Campbell’s new side will have to fight it out for a place at Wembley; he could be crucial to that after an impressive first campaign in South Yorkshire.

The former Stoke City man joined Chris Wilder’s side at Bramall Lane in the summer on a free transfer following his decision not to renew terms with Stoke, as he searched for a new permanent home for the first time as a professional player.

In many ways with Campbell, there was always undoubted talent there, and it was not too late for his career to get back on track, which Wilder and co. were willing to risk by taking a chance on a poor injury record last summer amid Jarrod Bowen comparisons this season.

Stoke fans aren’t happy with Tyrese Campbell after 2-0 Sheffield United win

Despite Gus Hamer’s exploits at one end of the pitch and Michael Cooper’s at the other, other players such as Campbell have also been key to their promotion push. The Sheffield United forward was looking to haunt his former side and looking for more than just that when he tried to buy a penalty.

He was subsequently booked for the dive during the first half, but Stoke supporters continued to boo and jeer at him for the remainder of his time on the pitch before being substituted in the 65th minute. Those not in the ground reacted angrily via Twitter/X to voice their frustrations.

Another said: “Diving against your former club of nearly a decade. Classless.”

A further reacted, stating: “If you’re gonna dive at least do it well. Looked like he was going swimming.”

A final reaction read: “Surprised tyrese Campbell didn’t injure himself diving there.”

It’s fair to say that the ‘classless’ decision will not have got him back in the good books of any Stoke fans. Pundits had even backed them to win, but the Blades came out on top 1-0 once again despite Wilder’s pre-match frustrations.

He was not at his best at all against his former employers, with the likes of Rhian Brewster and Callum O’Hare shining the brightest in our player ratings.

Tyrese Campbell’s goal record at Stoke and Sheffield United

Campbell does not have the most blistering goal record or a particularly impressive injury record but he’s young enough to kick on and he has after he made 164 appearances for the Potters, scoring 36 goals and notching 21 assists.

His most prolific league campaign in a Stoke shirt in the Championship was 2019/20, where he netted nine goals in 33 appearances – bagging a goal every 180 minutes, on average. He has already bettered that this term.

The risk this summer, regarding his injury record, was especially worth taking given Campbell’s versatility. The 25-year-old is able to operate as a number-nine, a second-striker, or as a right-sided forward. The low-risk of a free transfer appears to have been a masterstroke so far.

Time will tell just how smart this move is in the long run for Sheffield United, but Stoke’s loss has become their gain thus far, with the move to the Blades undoubtedly revitalising him. Both Campbell and Sheffield United know the cost of Championship promotion this season and will look for a late play-off push.
