Birmingham City get us underway for the 2025/26 Championship campaign on Friday evening as they make the trip to Ipswich Town.
It’s an exciting season to be a Blues fan, and supporters are already dreaming of promotion after what has been a very fine summer transfer window.
Tom Brady was keen to make vast changes to the team 12 months ago alongside Tom Wagner, and his wish was granted as the West Midlands outfit had a record-breaking League One campaign.
However, this transfer window has been about evolution rather than revolution and Birmingham have made some very smart additions, including Tommy Doyle who has been called the ‘signing of the summer’. Now, Chris Davies has outlined his position.

Chris Davies explains Tommy Doyle’s role at Birmingham City
Blues have not been in the Premier League since 2011, and this is perhaps their greatest chance since of returning to the top flight. However, they will need the likes of Doyle to be at their very best to help make this dream come true.

With matchday one just around the corner, Davies has spoken about where his new midfielder will feature at Birmingham this season. He said (via: Birmingham Live): “He can drop in in the build-up as more of a six type, he can play as an eight up and down the pitch, or he can play as a 10 in between the lines.
“He’s a really intelligent player who is good with the ball and he is creative enough to be a number 10. He’ll see a pass, he’ll make a pass, he can shoot. If he’s deeper he can knit the game together and switch the play.
“He’s a good all-round midfield player, I would say, and the make-up of those three – Paik, Iwata and Tommy – that is how I see it best looking at the moment, judging by their qualities, but from what I’ve seen of Tommy he can definitely play any position in midfield.”

The signing of Tommy Doyle is proof of Blues’ ambition
Birmingham are set on reaching the Premier League as quickly as possible, and a plan to build slowly like Brentford and Brighton did previously does not interest their ownership.
Therefore, bringing in players who have top flight experience is vital, and they have done that with Doyle. His versatility will be crucial in 2025/26, and he adds depth to the entirety of the midfield.

Doyle is a signing for not just the present, but for the future, and in the years to come Davies can build his midfield around the 23-year-old.
Nevertheless, his first task is to get settled in quickly as Birmingham make the journey to Portman Road to face relegated Ipswich.
