Sheffield United are looking to secure promotion from the Championship in 2024/25 but a former player is standing in their way.

The Blades were handed a points deduction at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign but are still firmly in the mix to win promotion to the Premier League this term.

Sheffield United beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, doing the double over their bitter rivals.

That victory means the Championship title race is firmly heating up, with the Blades, Leeds United, and Burnley all in contention to lift the trophy come May.

Burnley beat Swansea City with ease on Saturday but right now, it’s Daniel Farke’s men who remain Sheffield United’s biggest challenger, sitting just above them via goal difference.

Chris Wilder worked hard to sign Leeds United ace for Sheffield United

The Whites have dominated the second tier this season regarding both goals scored and their defensive record.

This is in no small part due to the efforts of former Sheffield United ace Ethan Ampadu, who made the permanent move to Elland Road in 2023.

Prior to that, however, the now 24-year-old spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Bramall Lane.

Following his arrival from Chelsea in September 2020, Wilder, who was still in his first spell as manager, spoke glowingly of the Welshman and revealed how hard they worked to land him, as per Yorkshire Live.

He said: “Ethan is an outstanding young player for Chelsea, and we’ve worked really hard to get his signature for the season.

“We need to thank Frank Lampard and the people at Chelsea for helping making this happen.

“We’ve got a good relationship with them and they know we’re going to take good care of him.

“It’s an important season for Ethan and playing in the Premier League for us is a good move for everyone. He brings a lot of qualities to the group and he’s someone we’ve tracked for two or three seasons.”

Ethan Ampadu comments on Championship promotion race

Ampadu has missed Leeds’ last five Championship fixtures with an injury but prior to that, was leading them out as captain.

There are still eight games of the season to play and the promotion race is looking likely to go down to the wire.

Ampadu discussed the Championship promotion race last week, as per BBC Sport, and was full of confidence Leeds can get over the line.

He said: “It’s the run-in. There’s three top teams at the minute that are all fighting for the same thing – four, if you want to include Sunderland as well. But for us, we’ve got full confidence in what we can achieve.

“We’re fighting to be at the top of the league. I don’t know who wouldn’t enjoy that. It’d be silly not to. And whilst we’re in it, we’re going to try and enjoy every moment of it.”
