Sheffield United have just broken 133-year record with historic win over Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield United left Hillsborough this weekend with three points in the bag, and bragging rights for the season, too. But, Chris Wilder’s men also made history with their 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The Blades secured the win thanks to a goal from United hero Rhian Brewster, who slotted into an open net after some fine work by Tyrese Campbell, and poor defending from the Owls.

Winning against fierce rivals is obviously a big deal at any point of the season, but outside of that bubble, the win takes Sheffield United level on points with Leeds United at the top of the Championship table going into the international break.

But, the victory in S6 also marked a momentous landmark for Chris Wilder’s team, who matched a record that was set way back in the 1892-93 season.

Sheffield United continue incredible away form

While the win in itself will naturally please die-hard United fan Wilder, it also saw his team extend their run of away wins to six games.

Prior to the win at Hillsborough, the Blades beat QPR at Loftus Road, Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, Derby County at Pride Park, Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, and Watford at Vicarage Road.

The last team to beat United on the road was Sunderland, at the Stadium of Light, on New Year’s Day.

This run of form matches the six-match winning run achieved by the Sheffield United side of 1892/93, when the Blades were part of the old Football League Second Division.

Back then, they beat Burslem Port Vale 10-0, Northwich Victoria 3-1, Ardwick 3-2, Grimsby Town 1-0, Burton Swifts 3-0, and Crewe Alexandra 4-0, all away from home. That was part of a 16-match unbeaten run in Division Two.

Steel City derby dominance continues for Sheffield United

Not only did Sheffield United match that historic record with the win over Wednesday, but they also condemned their rivals to some pretty frustrating records of their own.

The Blades taught the Owls a lesson back in November, and they did it all again this time, to secure a league double over their nemeses for the first time since the 2005/06 campaign.

By shutting out Wednesday here, United have also now made it five matches against their rivals without conceding a goal. The last time Sheffield Wednesday scored against the Blades, in fact, was in 2017, when Lucas Joao bagged in a 4-2 win for the away side at Hillsborough.

The frustrating thing for Sheffield Wednesday is, it could all have been very different had Michael Smith buried his early chance instead of heading straight at Michael Cooper. Funny how football works, isn’t it?
